If residents don't specifically designate they want their donation to go to their local United Way, Foster said it defaults to the United Way of the community where they work. Foster said the number of agencies the local United Way supports has gone up from 15 last year, to 19. They are: Acclaim Health, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Halton, Canadian Mental Health Association of Halton, Community Living North Halton, Distress Centre North Halton, Food for Life, Girls Inc., Halton Child & Youth Services (Reach Out Centre for Kids), Halton Family Services, Halton Organization for Pride & Education, Halton Trauma Centre, Hope Place Centres, Lighthouse Program for Grieving Children, Links2Care, Literacy North Halton, Nelson Youth Centres, St. John Ambulance, STRIDE and Support & Housing Halton "We do our homework. The charities that we are giving our money to are in good standing," said Foster. She said United Way volunteers who live in the community review the applications from the agencies seeking funding and the agencies have to meet the United Way's criteria. Upcoming events for the United Way include the community barbecue at Sobeys, Acton, Saturday, Sept. 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The 12th annual Presidents Ball will be held at the Club at North Halton Saturday, Sept. 18. Tickets are $90 per person and include a gourmet meal, dance and silent auction. Music will be provided by Laura T. (of Georgetown) and Jazz Band. Foster said there will be several items up for bid in the silent auction, including bed and breakfast stays, a Raptors jersey signed by Jose Calderon, Raptors tickets, art, golf packages and ski packages to name a few. The United Way is still accepting auction items for the event. Major sponsors of the ball are Dufferin Aggregates, Purity Life and Paul Armstrong Insurance. "This is a fabulous opportunity to come out for some gourmet food, do some early Christmas shopping, and help a good cause," said Foster. For tickets, or to donate an item to the silent auction, contact Foster at the United Way office at 905-877-3066. Another upcoming fundraiser is the Holiday House Tour Saturday, Nov. 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year the tour will feature six homes in the downtown Georgetown area that have been professionally decked out for Christmas. "It gives people an opportunity to get some ideas for decorating," said Foster. Tickets will be $30 per person and include lunch at St. John's United Church where people can watch demonstrations, such as the one put on by John Fendley of Digs on How to Create a Large Urn for Christmas. Vendors will be selling items at the church. Tickets will be available mid-October.
