14 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,September 14, 2010 Youth Company www.georgetownlittletheatre.ca Local Run for Wells to raise funds to provide African villages with water Safe water is a basic need-- and yet more than one billion people in the world don't have access to it. Each year more than three million people-- two million of them children-- die from contaminated drinking water. The Run for Wells is a local grassroots initiative that was started to help fund safe water projects in African communities. In the first year, participants and sponsors raised over $30,000 with which World Vision Canada was able to drill two deep water wells. Last year, enough was raised to drill another well. Last year, extreme adventure athlete Ray Zahab took part in the run and briefly addressed the participants prior to the run. "I've been to communities in Africa where they have fresh water and in others where they don't and I asked the kids in each place what they want to be when they grow up," he said. "The kids with the fresh water said `doctor,' `teacher,' `engineer.' The kids without water nearby didn't say much; they certainly didn't have those kinds of dreams and often that's because they're spending their days getting water, just trying to survive, and they don't have time for things like school. Today's run is giving more than just water; it's giving hope." This year, organizer Renate VanLeeuwen has set a goal of $30,000-- to pay for two more wells. "As a water-wealthy, well-dependent community it would be great to come together to put wells in places that so desperately need them," said VanLeeuwen. "We in Canada enjoy the number two position worldwide for fresh water resources. The Run for Wells continues to address this disparity. Our sponsors: Maple Reinders, EndZone Sports Exchange, Herman's Aluminum, Feet in Motion, PsyCor and HTV in partnership with many other businesses and individuals, will take up the cause again on September 25 at the Gellert Centre in Georgetown." Runners, walkers and supporters of all ages and abilities will enjoy this feelgood event, featuring a 5K race, a 5K power walk, a Kids 1K Fun Run where kids can carry water to experience on a small scale what some kids in Africa do daily, food, great prizes, and family friendly activities such as bouncy castle. "Come be a part of this family fun event as we fight the injustice of children dying for want of a cup of clean water," said VanLeeuwen.
