Acton library taking shape Spread out like an old-fashioned lady's fan, atop steel columns, the roof beams are up at the new Acton branch library. "The patrons are just loving the look," said Geoff Cannon, Halton Hills Public Library's manager of Public Services, and project manager for the Acton library construction. "They're very excited that it's really happening." With the wood beams installed, you get a real sense of what the library will look like, he said. The beams-- a key feature of the architecture-- will be viewed from the interior as well. These honeycoloured rafters are known as glulam. They are made from glue-laminated timber, an environmentally-friendly wood that will add strength and beauty to the building, said Cannon. The glulam beams, structural steel girders, and the poured concrete slab floor form the skeleton for the building's half-moon shape. The next step will be the roof, a metal deck that will be covered with a weatherproof layer. Walls will go up soon to enclose the building before winter weather arrives. The "close-in" date is set for late October. This week drilling began on site for the geothermal bore holes. The geothermal system will be an energy-efficient heating and cooling system that uses the heat of the ground to warm the building in the winter with the reverse in the summer. Cannon said everything is going as planned. "Tick, tick, tick...it's coming along nicely," Cannon said, adding the project is on track for completion for December or January, well ahead of the federal government's imposed deadline of March 31, 2011. At the same time, work is beginning on the parking lot, and construction firm has ensured the large sugar maple has been fenced off and protected from damage. The Town's Parks Department is designing a terraced lawn to the west of the building, on the site of the present library. Native trees and grasses and shrubs will be planted throughout the rest of the property. To check out the building's progress go to the library's Flickr page: www. flickr.com/photos/hhlp/ NOW OPEN!
