More CALENDAR, pg. 35 YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SPEND $$$ TO AUDITION FOR CLIENTS LIKE DISNEY & TWILIGHT SAGA/BREAKING DAWN YOU MUST ACT NOW TO SAVE OUR RAVINES Walk along the bank of the Credit River near Georgetown; listen to the sound of the water running and the wind rustling the leaves on the trees. This is tranquility! With the recently proposed Barber Mill development, it may be a thing of the past in yet another part of our town. You must step forward now and state your objections to this never-ending onslaught on the Credit River. We in Save Our Ravines (S.O.R.) are most concerned about the potential negative impacts on this environmentally sensitive area (encroachment of floodplain, presence of hazard land, etc.). We agree, the current buildings at the Barber Mill site are presently an eyesore and something has to be done. True restoration, i.e., bringing back what once was, would be great. The Barber Mill was built around 1850 using Credit River limestone and by 1862 was considered the largest paper manufacturer in North America. Two decades later, it was the first mill in North America, perhaps the world, to use hydroelectric power delivered from off-site. The ruins of the mill's former dynamo building can still be seen from Armstrong Avenue. The Barber Mill is very much part of Georgetown's heritage. Is the proposed development really about preserving all of this? We believe it is not. It takes a lot of imagination to consider it resembling the historic mill! In addition, to put this enormous structure a stone's throw away from the Credit River is a travesty. It is a contradiction of why we live here. We have lived here for a long time, or chose to live here recently, partly because of our town's natural beauty. This action will destroy yet another beautiful part of the Credit River Valley. This beautiful stream and its watershed are already beleaguered by developments along its course. What precedent are we setting if we allow this massive project to be built right next to the river? Where will the next one go? In Georgetown, or further downstream? Why is it that our environment, in other words, our legacy for our children, loses out so many times to "big money"? You're help is needed. If you feel that it is inappropriate use of the site, please state your opposition to your council members. YOU JUST NEED A GREAT AGENT!
