28 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, September 23, 2010 ENTERTAINMENT Artist Bonnie Glass's Dream of a Show returns By JANET FRISKNEY Special to Metroland Media Group Back in 2007, local artist Bonnie Glass dreamed of establishing an annual art show and sale that would highlight unique works by highly creative Canadian artists, particularly those specializing in the field of wearable art, the focus of her own creative passion. "I was convinced that Canadian artists needed a new venue through which to display and sell their art," says Glass. "Canada has many talented artists who simply aren't getting the exposure they deserve." In collaboration with a handful of supporters, Glass produced the inaugural show in March 2007, and further shows followed in 2008 and 2009. Just for Us Originals: The Wearable Art Show, as the venture is now officially known, will return on September 24 and 25, at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga. With more than 30 artists slated to exhibit and sell their works this year, the 2010 event promises to be bigger and better than ever before. "The artists appearing in the show specialize in different forms of wearable art, and work in a variety of media." Glass represents one among a handful of artists who live in the Halton area who will be part of the show. Jewelry designer Naomi Assenheim of Opal Wing Creations and artwear designer Sandra Krosse both have studios in Glen Williams. Then there's knitwear designer Alfie Galda (Rockwood), lampwork glass artist and jeweller Berna Kilic (Milton), and artwear designer Sally Omar (Oakville). Other participating artists live as far away as Thunder Bay, Sudbury and Quebec! Samples of the artwork are on the website (www.just-for-us.biz). Admission and parking is free. On Friday, Sept. 24, the event will be open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Sept. 25, the show will run 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free fashion shows will be held each day. On Friday, the fashion shows will start at 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.; on Saturday, the fashion shows are at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Halton Hills fibre artist Bonnie Glass poses with her poster for Just for Us Originals: The Wearable Art Show 2010 on this Friday and Saturday. What is meant by "wearable art"? "Original works of art that we wear on our bodies," explains Glass, adding that jewelry, clothing, hats, purses, and scarves are all forms of wearable art. Gleeful performance Mrs. Sylvester (Sara Duklas, left) takes a temper tantrum as one of her students (Taylor Gruszka) quakes at her side in the Summer Rec Department's Performing Arts Camp production of High School GLEEKical on the stage at John Elliott Theatre. The show follows the antics of three different schools, trying to win the title of Glee Club champions.
