Candidates lament vandalism to signs By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer As the election signs have gone up, to the frustration of candidates, some of them have been coming down. Paul Sproule, husband of Halton Catholic District School Board Trustee Rosanna Palmieri, said they began putting up signs on Friday, Sept. 17. "In five days, 12 per cent of these signs have gone missing and 30 per cent of the signs have been pulled out and or vandalized," said Sproule. He said one of their signs was found in the river at Cedarvale Park and another was found 10 metres away from where it had been put up. Mark Rowe, the other candidate for HCDSB trustee, said he has had a few signs knocked down and one was "karate-chopped" in half. "I have had signs knocked down in peculiar places," said Ward 3/4 Regional Council candidate Jane Fogal. "It is an issue." Dave Kentner, candidate for Ward 3 councillor, attributes his signs that have been knocked down to wind, which is the case also for Ward 2 council candidate Joan Robson, and Bob Inglis who is running for a Ward 4 council seat. "Every election we do experience some vandalism," said Robson. "I know it's frustrating for candidates when that happens," said Inglis. Halton Police say those who tamper with/vandalize or take election signs could be facing a theft under $5,000 charge or mischief charge. Candidates are allowed to put signs up on the road allowances, except for medians or where the sign would be a traffic hazard. Candidates must get permission of the property owner before placing any signs on private property or the abutting boulevard. All election signs are to be taken down within 48 hours of election day-- Oct. 25. 3 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday, October 5, 2010 David Usher joins Cedarvale tree planting Juno award-winning musician David Usher (above) visited Georgetown Saturday to help celebrate Trees by the Shore's 50th planting event.
