15 Independent & Free Press, Thursday, October 7, 2010 A team of volunteers from Maple Avenue Baptist Church are in Brazil this week helping to build a community centre. They are (from left) Gary Crosbie, Charles Edwards, Paul Gazdik, Nicole Knutson, Charlene Dors, Aaron Knutson, Rebecca Hagerman, Mark Krapez, Zac Gazdik, and Michael Krapez. The shirts they are wearing with the words "Bridges to Brazil" will be left behind as symbols of the connection being made between the two countries. A team of local volunteers flew out on September 30, headed for an isolated, impoverished fishing village on the northeast coast of Brazil. The team from Maple Avenue Baptist Church will stay each night in the town of Torto on the Parnaiba river delta. They will travel by boat each day to the tiny village of Morro do Meio to build a community centre that will serve as a school, medical clinic, and meeting area. While team members paid their own airfare, the Georgetown church donated money for the building materials. Other donations from the community will cover food, transportation, Church to build Brazilian community centre and other costs related to the project. Twelve large duffel bags filled with donated clothing, sports equipment, and school supplies have been collected. There will also be opportunities to teach English, work with the children, and offer encouragement to the people. The trip is sponsored by the international organization, Partners International. Pacific Western's kindness and generosity for transporting the Missions Team to the airport in their coach bus was truly appreciated.
