To the families and dance friends of the Halton Hills School of Dance and Georgetown I wanted to take this time to say Thank You for your kind hospitality! What a lovely community of people and businesses, your warm welcome is very much appreciated. As of July 1, 2010 I am the proud owner of the Halton Hills School of Dance at 142 Mill Street, Georgetown. The dance school is well established in the community operating 30 years. Founded by Yvonne Oldaker who after 25 years passed the business along to Allisson Pasma. Both ladies have been inspiring and supportive. Being new to the community I thought I would give you a bit of glimpse who I am and the dance school's new direction. NEW AND EXCITING CHANGES to the Halton Hills School of Dance!! New! New Examinations being offered in Jazz, Tap and Acro At the age of 18, in my home town of Sault Ste Marie, a good friend of mine approached me with the idea of opening a dance school. My initial reaction was "Sure why not" . In 1979 we founded the Kiana School of Dance Arts. After one year my then partner decided to take another journey and I continued on my own. How quickly 19 years passed. The dancers and the dance school had many wonderful success stories. Over the years I have seen many of my students advance in various sectors of the dance world. Teachers, dance educators and performers. Some of my past students have accepted positions with ballet companies worldwide. Like myself they have all experienced what is like to share their love of dance. Moving to Southern Ontario offered a new kind of experience for me. I have travelled throughout Europe, the United States and Canada, giving master classes to such organizations as Dance Masters of America, Dance Olympus, The Canadian Dance Teachers Association, Dance Power, to name a few. As a ballet examiner and sitting on the examination board in Ontario myself and a number of teachers and examiners of the RAD, Cecchetti and Vaganova backgrounds collaborated to establish a National Ballet syllabus for the Canadian Dance Teachers Association. The syllabus is now national and reaches right across Canada. As a dance adjudicator, these past 20 years I have been fortunate to have seen brilliant choreographers and dancers who have inspired me greatly. In my early years - as a dance student, I considered myself a bit of a "Gypsy" . I took in many dance workshops, conventions, spent time in New York and L.A. learning from the best. In my very early twenties I accepted the most amazing opportunity. Lés Ballets Jazz De Montreal offered me the chance to study on full scholarship. Even though I have already started up the dance school, I couldn't resist this "Dance Gift" . I quickly put teachers in to place, packed my bags and put myself in the middle of the most talented dancers I have ever seen. The faculty at Lés Ballets Jazz was unsurpassed! To this day I continue to use many of the techniques and training ideas that these masters offered me. I didn't stop with just dance studies, I also took up vocal and acting classes, Musical Theatre being one of my many passions. This week I begin auditioning performers for Joseph! The show has a run in February and I hope that you will come out to enjoy. So there you have it, a glimpse of where I have come from, and my dance journey. These past 32 or so years have inspired me to continue educating dancers, setting a solid dance foundation. Dance and the dance educators that I have come to know have helped thrust me forward into today's society and have given me confidence to build a dream and make that dream come true! I hope to be part of sending our dancers forward with grace and poise and to help build their confidence so that they can be the best they can be. I look forward to sharing my many dance experiences with my students of the Halton Hills School of Dance. Thank you to the parents who have given a warm welcome.
