Photo by Eamonn Maher MacKenzie Cameron and Matthew Kreis of St. Catherine of Alexandria in Georgetown South became members of an exclusive group in cross-country running at the recent Halton Catholic District School Board championship meet held at Bronte Creek Provincial Park. Both won their respective races to mark the fourth consecutive year that each has earned a trip to the podium at the HCDSB competition, which drew close to 2,400 athletes for the 2010 event. Cameron took top spot in the bantam girls' Division A race, while Kreis crossed the finish line first amongst the midget Division A boys, just ahead of runner-up Peter Otto from St. Francis of Assisi. As well, St. Catherine's Sydney Nicholson received a silver medal for her finish in the Group 1 Special Olympics' 200m cross-country run, with Holy Cross's Dorian Helgason receiving bronze in the boys' 200m event. After going undefeated during the 2009 campaign at the Tier II junior level and winning CtK's first-ever Halton Secondary School Athletic Association hoops title, the senior Jaguars' debut against Oakville's Holy Trinity was a bit of a wreck in a 40-30 loss to the Titans. Since then, however, coach Mike Bertin's side has been filling up the rear-view mirrors of the league-leaders, reeling off seven straight victories, including a 40-39 victory last week over Loyola, which at the time was ranked third in the Toronto Star's GTA Top 10. "I don't think people were expecting us to be as strong this year, but it's a credit to the girls, the way they've adjusted to senior ball," said Bertin. "We thought that our strength would be our shooting, but overall our percentage is significantly down. We have four girls who can score 10 to 15 points a game, but we haven't put all of our scoring touches together on a consistent basis yet, just flashes of it. We're hoping that over the next couple of weeks leading into the playoffs we can get that in order." Led by Team Ontario star point guard Camilla Paluch, the Jaguars overwhelmed the opposition last year with speed and a multipronged scoring attack, complemented by Nicole Waters and Cierra Henry, who led the Jags with 17 points Tuesday in a 46-34 win over Oakville-Trafalgar. Taylor Burns is the lone Grade 12 starter on this year's senior squad and Bertin has recruited from the volleyball ranks to find a centre, Misha Fitterer, who can match up height-wise with unbeaten Notre Dame and the 6-2 Georgetown Rebels, who will visit CtK today (Thursday) in a showdown that will likely provide the winner with home-court advantage well into the post-season. "It's turned out to be an exciting season and Georgetown has a tall, pressure team. That should be a tough test for us," Bertin added. "I think we should film that game." In Tuesday's junior game, Oakville-Trafalgar defeated the Jaguars 40-27. Victoria Debrincat Stewarttown Stingers dominate at elementary cross-country meet The Stingers from Stewarttown emerged from last week's Halton District School Board's Division C elementary crosscountry championship as the big winners, earning four regional team pennants for their running prowess. Held at Sherwood Park in Burlington, the Halton meet featured a total of 1,846 students in various age groupings. Stewarttown claimed overall team titles in the junior girls and boys' categories (11 yrs.), along with the intermediate boys (12 yrs.) and the senior boys (13 yrs.). Georgetown's Centennial Middle School also had a strong showing, placing third in the juor led CtK with seven points. GOLF: Much like the waterlogged Golden Horseshoe tournament earlier this month, last week's provincial championships in Barrie were played under dreadful weather conditions. Yet Christ the King student Samantha Spencer was able to crack the top 10 in a field of about 140 golfers in her first appearance at OFSAA, finishing in a tie for ninth after a round of 81, six shots back of the winner. The 14-year-old also recorded the lowest score for a Grade 9 student and was second among the 10 GHAC qualifiers. nior boys' team standings and fifth for both the junior girls and intermediate boys.
