20 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, November 4, 2010 HILLSVIEW-NEWS FROM THE SENIORS CENTRES Georgetown Seniors Centre By FLORENCE RIEHL Georgetown Seniors Centre Welcome to November. Time to get out the scarves, hats and gloves and prepare for another winter season. But not to worry! There are lots going on at the Centre to keep you busy and warm. I hope you have picked up your copy of the HillsView for November, December, and January. They are available at Reception. Our first big event for this month is the Annual Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 20. They are looking for new items for the Penny Table, baked goods for the bake sale, and crafts for the Craft Table. All donations can be brought to the Centre during the week of Nov. 15, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. When you come to the Bazaar give yourself enough time to have lunch in our famous Tea Room. There is still some room on the Buffalo Cross Border Shopping trip on Wednesday, Nov. 17. Call me at 905-873-1210 or drop into the Centre to sign up. Tickets for the Murder Mystery Dinner in January are about half spoken for. Don't wait too long. Remember this event is open to the public and looks to be a fun evening. I know some of you are already getting into the Christmas shopping. Here are some suggestions for those people on your list who are hard to buy for: a year's membership to the GDSC for anyone 55+, $35; a ticket to the Mystery dinner, $75; registration fee to one of the Active Living Programs, $58.22; a selection for hats, scarves, mittens, slippers from the well stocked craft shelves; a seat on one of the upcoming day trips. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who called or sent cards while I was laid up for a couple of weeks. All is well now and I am back on the trail again. I won't be talking with you again before Remembrance Day, Nov. 11 so I would like to remind you all to wear a poppy to thank a veteran and as a proud Canadian. Acton Seniors Centre By JULIE CONROY Acton Seniors Centre Eight new members enjoyed meeting the Acton Seniors Centre's board members and each other, at the the New Members Lunch on Tuesday, Oct. 26. Patrick Fennell won the gift certificate generously donated by Profile Hair Salon. Sobeys donated a beautiful plant and Madge Turner was happy to win it. Ann Anderson-Wilcox was pleased to win a ticket to our next social dinner plus a box of chocolates. The next social dinner will feature a taste of Britain-- roast beef, Yorkshire puddings, mashed potatoes followed by trifle. Kent Tocher will be entertaining, so we will be singing along to some old favourites, plus dancing if the mood takes us. On Wednesday, Oct. 27, a coach full of hopeful winners from Acton and Georgetown travelled to Rama for their monthly trip. The 50/50 draw was won by Dorothy Yelland. The birthday winner was Joyce Johnston and in the lucky seats were Helen Hore, Bill Brewer, Tony Vallichi, Irene Filipovic and Ethel McEachern. Ruth asked me to mention that if the sheet is full, please sign up on the waiting list as seats often become available. The next trip is on Nov 24 and the December trip is on Dec. 29. Ruth Burke has quilting batting and crochet cotton if anyone can use it. It's free! If you can use these items please call Ruth, 519853-5124. It's only three weeks until our Christmas bazaar. Everyone is busy getting prepared. I saw Marion Storey and Marj McDonough busy creating masterpieces that defied the laws of gravity. The baskets are crammed full of Christmas goodies. Tickets are on sale now. Eileen Dix asked me to mention the Hiking group will change to their fall/winter schedule, Nov. 12. They meet at the Centre at 1 p.m. and car pool to various trails. Phyllis Bunn was the lucky winner of the 50/50 last Friday. She won $204. Luck seems to be shining on Phyllis as she won six weeks ago. Georgetown Alexander Trenton, DD, F.C.A.D.
