Karen Caissie Karen Caissie is a potter who has great passion for her craft. From the time her hands first touched clay, she knew she was meant for it. A serious potter since 1994, all of Caissie's works are in the most vivid of colours. Creating `quilted mugs', she attributes that aspect of her style to being reminiscent of her aunt's quilts which she made for years. Drawing from the family's quilting history and love of colour, it was natural she'd replicate those qualities in her work. She creates beautifully crafted functional pieces like mugs and sugar bowls, as well as elegant plates and giant free-standing pedestal bird baths-- her signature item. Courses at Sheridan College, various workshops and conferences keep her talents honed. Caissie is a member of the Credit Valley Artisans & the Hamilton Potters Guild. Email: potterybykaren@hotmail.com Laura Kingsbury Laura Kingsbury has been creating her finely-detailed paintings of wildlife for more than 25 years. "I had my degree in Wildlife Biology and Management and worked as a biologist/ naturalist," said Kingsbury. "But when I became an unemployed biologist, I just naturally moved to the painting." Laura cites seeing an exhibition of Robert Bateman's work at the National Art Gallery in Ottawa as the initial inspiration that got her going. "I had always studied art, as far back as high school, but it was only as a hobby for me," she said. "But seeing Bateman's work gave me the inspiration I needed to go that extra distance, and become a professional." With her background in ornithology (study of birds) and her love of bird watching it was natural that she would marry the two together to create detailed images of birds. Today, she has a hands-on approach to her craft, not only painting various wildlife paintings, but she also does her own framing, writes her own publicity and plans her own marketing. Laura has published 20 limited edition art prints, two of which have been presented by the Canadian government to the presidents of Zambia and the Russian Federation.
