Holly Engstrom and Barbora Trencianska, both Grade 10 students at Georgetown District High School, ate only beans and rice and drank water between Oct. 15 and 31 to sympathize with families living in poverty. "We wanted to experience what it's like for people in poverty, not being able to choose what they eat," said Engstrom. "It was really hard. Both of us had a lot less energy and were really moody." Both of the girls, members of the school's Social Justice League, also went door-to-door in the Stewart's Mill area collecting food for the food bank. "Most of the people were really supportive, and said it's a good thing (we did)," said Engstrom. They collected a truckload full of food and delivered it to the food bank Oct. 30. One of the residents offered to donate $1,000 to the food bank in their names. "I think it's best to help people in your own country or area first because if you can't take care of your own, how can you help people in other countries?" said Engstrom.
