Create a "new normal" as soon as possible. Children thrive on routine. 2. Parent from a place of love and compassion rather than from a place of guilt. Parents often believe that they have to make up for the stress and challenges their child is facing. By using a "making up" approach, you may be preventing them from learning that they are resilient. 3. Don't plea with your children to behave. They are children, and it is not their responsibility to make life easy on you. It is your responsibility to make life more stable for them. 4. Remain a parent with clear rules and boundaries. Be careful not to turn your children into your best friend/source of support. Many single parents use the "three musketeers" parenting approach. Elevating children to your level is likely to overwhelm and stress them. After all, you are dealing with things they don't have the emotional strength and skills to handle. 5. Use your friends and family for comfort and support, not your children. 6. Remember that you are your children's point of reference. If you are not coping well, they are not going to cope well either. If they see you distraught, they are likely to take your non-verbal cues over your reassuring words. Children become distressed and confused when your words and your behaviours are not consistent. If you are distressed acknowledge it, consult a therapist and let your children know you are seeking help. Reassure them that you will be fine and you are there to support them. 7. Acknowledge your child's losses. Grief is a normal state of mind. Offer the opportunity to talk and listen without judgement. Empathize without going into a "mutual sharing session". Remember, you are grieving different things than your child. 8 Separate the end of your marriage from the concept of family. Your children have the same people in their family even though they have different living arrangements. (905) 877-CARE (2273) Q: A: How do I Gift the Boss or a Special Coworker? You want to gift the boss with something special, but you don't want to be too personal or exorbitant. You don't want to embarrass the receiver with your largesse, but you don't want to appear tight fisted in the eyes of someone you like or your office peers. These are my favorite gifts for your valued work associate. Memory Books and Scrapbooks People appreciate gifts that commemorate good times and successes at work. A memory book in which all staff write comments and share high points of the year is an often appreciated gift. Depending on the individual, scrap books with pictures of staff activities, positive notes from customers, and memory notes from staff make successful gifts. Picture Frames and Photo Albums Consider a group photograph in an attractive frame. You can make the photograph formal or informal, or consider a collage of different staff pictures. (Some of these are group gifts.) A photo album that includes pictures of staff events, office happenings, staff and customer interaction is a particularly winning choice. Q: A: Can I trust the internet for health information? Our clinic's website www.rossphysio.com has a clinical library with hundreds of great articles written by registered physiotherapists (including yours truly) often with the scientific references noted for the article. There is a body map and a folder system so you can find what you are interested in quickly. You can also choose areas that you are interested in and be notified when a new article is added to that section of the site. A word of caution though partner with a Physiotherapist during your rehab to avoid disappointing results or injury. Please take advantage of this information and stay well. Q: A: Are my children at risk for Gum Disease? Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas! It's a sad fact. Children are affected by gum disease just as adults are. For some, it's a matter of neglecting proper care of the teeth. For others, it's a matter of the parents not understanding the importance of oral hygiene in their children. Gum, or periodontal, disease is a serious business. It's made even more dangerous by the fact that it is often painless. It is caused by plaque. This sticky film produces toxins which can damage the gums. As a parent, you should make it a point to check your children's teeth periodically for the signs of gum disease. Look for redness, tenderness and swelling at the gumline. Diseased gums bleed easily and may lead to persistent bad breath and loose teeth. Encourage your child to brush at least twice daily. Flavoured children's toothpaste can help encourage this habit. Teach your children to floss regularly, it's possible even at young ages. Model a good diet by balancing it with a broad variety of foods and placing limits on sweets and between meal snacks.
