Eclipse, winter solstice coincide Local photographer Rein Pater stayed up late to snap these photos of the total lunar eclipse Tuesday. The moon took on a deep red and brownish hue early in the morning as its normal brilliance was obscured by the eclipse. It occurred on the same night as the winter solstice, which doesn't happen very often. NASA says the last time the two events coincided was in 1638-- 372 years ago. A deep reddish shadow began to creep across the moon at about 1:33 a.m. EST and it was completely covered less than two hours later. Pater took his photos between 1:20 and 2:40 a.m. The next lunar eclipse to be visible in Canada is set to occur Dec. 10, 2011. The Christmas light display at the Lambert house at 14 Johnson Cres., Georgetown already has 5,000 more lights than last year-- and Darryl Lambert is still adding lights figuring they could reach 49,000 by the time he's all done. Lambert's handiwork has been recognized by outrageouslights.ca, which has named him Canada's Most Outrageous Holiday Home Decorator. The award includes $1,000 worth of Christmas movie memorabilia donated by RetroFestive.ca. Just like last year, the spectacular display choreographed to music (two songs this year) is a fundraiser for the Georgetown Hospital Foundation. Last year close to $8,000 was dropped in the donation box at the front of their home from people who checked out their lights. When the Lamberts were looking to buy their current home Kathy said her husband wanted to buy it because it had great potential for more elaborate light displays than their previous house. "He (Darryl) bought the house because it would work for the lights. He didn't care about the rest of it, only the lights," said Kathy. "He even had the (house) builder upgrade the electrical service so it could handle the load the Christmas lights would put on the system." The display uses more than 3,000 ft. of extension cords and doubles the family's monthly hydro bill. Visitors can tune their radio to FM 104.9 to hear the music synced to the lights and a commentary. Her husband started putting up the lights two weeks before Halloween and had help from his dad Gerry Lambert, cousin Michael Lambert, brother-in-law Kyle Davis, children Ryan and Haley and other friends and family. "What makes our house (display) different is the majority (of the lit items) were made by Darryl," said Kathy. The family was thrilled to receive so many donations last year and are hoping for the same this year. The light display will be on MondayThursday from 5:30-11 p.m. and Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 5:30 p.m. to midnight until January 9. Johnson Cres. is off Berton Blvd. at Trafalgar Rd. The Lambert family, from left, Ryan, Haley, Kathy and Darryl, pose outside their Johnson Cres. home. The extravagant light show boasts more than 49,000 lights, or will, when Darryl gets done adding to it.
