GO Transit coming to Acton in 2011 The federal government's investments in GO Transit are now paying off. We will now be getting better train service for commuters in Halton Region and Wellington County. This year, GO Transit will be expanded to Acton, Guelph and Kitchener. Service is scheduled to begin by the end of 2011. In 2009, as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan, the federal government spent $15 million to expand the railway bridge over the Credit River on the Union Station-Georgetown GO line. This expansion-- the addition of a second track on the bridge and provision for a third-- eliminated a key bottleneck that had been preventing GO Transit from expanding to Acton, Guelph and Kitchener. In addition, the federal government also provided funding toward a new $5.5 million dollar GO bus storage facility in Aberfoyle located in Puslinch Township. GO will begin building new infrastructure at stations in Acton, Guelph and Kitchener, as well as bringing an additional Michael Chong 54 new route-kilometres into the system. This infrastructure will support two morning and two evening trains. These GO Transit improvements are part of $250 million in federal money for a dozen GO Transit projects, which included a dozen new GO station parking lots and upgrades to rail lines to increase service reliability. The Province of Ontario matched all these funds, for a total federalprovincial investment of $500 million. The expansion of GO Transit will encourage existing commuters to leave their cars behind and use transit, helping to reduce emissions. It is also good news for existing Georgetown com- muters, who will have improved service as a result of this expansion. GO Transit expansion will also help households reduce their transportation costs, especially important as oil hovers just below triple digit levels. As mentioned in previous columns, communities in the rapidly growing Golden Horseshoe are vulnerable to rising oil prices-- driven by an insatiable appetite for energy in the developing world and by the increasingly difficulty in extracting new supplies of oil (think of the Gulf oil blowout last spring). These vulnerabilities are amplified by low-density sprawl and insufficient rapid transit. I am glad that these federal investments in rapid transit will allow GO Transit to expand in Halton and Wellington. It is a step in the right direction. ··· If I can be of any assistance, do not hesitate to contact me at chongm@parl.gc.ca or at (866) 878 5556. --Michael Chong is the MPP for Wellington-Halton Hills Alexander Trenton, DD, F.C.A.D.
