Acton library checks out Saturday By CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer After 44 years, the Acton library-- a Canadian centenary project of the people of Acton-- will close it doors for the final time this Saturday, Feb. 5. Library manager of Public Services, Geoff Cannon is urging library patrons to take advantage this week of "once-in-a-lifetime" extra-long loan periods to sign out books, CDs and DVDs. Then, over the next 10 days, library staff will begin moving the library's contents to the new library next door. The new 7,800 sq. ft. branch-- twice the size of the older building-- will open its doors to the public on Tuesday, Feb. 22. Construction began in April to build a library building without the current deficiencies of the Centennial building: inaccessibility for wheelchairs and strollers, insufficient space for collections, lack of meeting space and limited parking. The federal and provincial governments contributed about two-thirds of the $4.2 million cost through infrastructure stimulus funding and other grants. The library will include a dedicated spot for storytime and crafts including a sink and a nearby family washroom. Adults can meet in a multipurpose room at the building's other end for community events, presentations, and classes. There is also a teen lounge, and three enclosed study rooms. A fireplace, donated by The Friends of the Library, will be surrounded by comfortable chairs, while a cowhide donated by Ron and Susan Heller will hang nearby to serve as a visual reminder of the Acton's Leathertown heritage. Eight Internet stations-- doubling the current number-- will be available and networked to a colour printer. The children's area will have their own Internet desk with three stations.
