Up and over SPORTS & LEISURE Rebels rule the pool Swimmers from Georgetown District High School have now won a dozen consecutive Halton team championships, turning in one of their most dominating performances yet at last week's 2011 meet at the University of Guelph. The Rebels captured eight of nine possible team titles at the Halton meet, and even the category they didn't win-- the new Para division for swimmers with intellectual or physical disabilities-- has been a successful part of this year's program, said GDHS head coach Krista Nicholls. Several students were multiple gold medalists in Guelph and approximately 60 of the team's 77 members are posting times that would qualify them for the provincial championships March 1-2 at the Etobicoke Olympium. Qualifying for the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations meet will take place at the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference championships to be held Monday, again in Guelph. The Rebels have won the last two OFSAA overall team titles and appear destined for another based on results so far. Georgetown accumulated a highestever point total of 1,265 in winning the Halton crown, almost double that of second-place Oakville-Trafalgar with 629.5. Nadiya Safanova and Cameron Elgie earned five gold medals each for GDHS, and other multiple-event winners included Trevor Burwell, Rachel Truscott, Sarah Reid, Sam Bellman, Nikolay Videnov, Calum Smith, Aaron Brautigam, Lauren Brewster, Robyn Rousseau, Stefan Sicard, Chris Bellman, Daniel Ardron, Kristen Davison, Megan Ardron, Nicole Sherratt, Charlie Wright, Ryan Mersiadis-Carrier and Corey LeBlanc. As well, 11 of the 12 Rebel relay teams qualified for GHAC. Not only was the aspiring artist a force in the pool by winning the junior boys' 50m breaststroke race and another gold in the 200m medley relay, but he was a hit with teammates who sported his tattoo-like designs drawn with washable markers. "They've added a whole new dimension to our team," added Nicholls, who has taken over the head coaching duties as Jon Newcombe is on a sabbatical in New Zealand. "Our student coaches, Amber Cubitt and Emily Bourque, work with Kate and Mirren and they have their own lane in practice. Corey is a member of the Blue Fins (local swim club) and is a strong freestyler. Our kids get crazy and cheer them on. It's been great to see how much they've improved in such a short time." Highlights for Christ the King Secondary School swimmers included a third-place individual finish for Samantha Ceci in the girls' 100m butterfly. Ceci also teamed up with fellow Jaguars Lexie Kroezen, Emily Hansen and Avery Jans to place runner-up in the girls' 400m freestyle relay.
