24 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, February 24, 2011 Medal bonanza for local speed skaters A number of Georgetown residents have earned medals this winter while wearing the colours of the Milton Speed Skating Club. Twelve-year-old Karenna Haefner has been cutting down on her qualifying times and collected her first medal, a silver, at the 5th Ability meet held recently at the MasterCard Centre in Etobicoke. Another new club member, 11-year-old Cameron Burns, also made his first trip to the podium with a silver at another competition. Ten-year-old Kelsey Carr brought home a bronze medal from the second Ontario Cup event and is ranked third in the province for her age class. Ray Buchanan, 7, and Calum McAlpine, 13, earned bronzes as well, while 10-year-old David Bazso is tearing up the track, reaching the Ontario Cup level and getting a gold medal at the meet in Clarington. Sandro golden at provincial meet Georgetown's David Sandro was one of the big winners from Milton-based Gold Medal Gymnastics at the first Gymnastics Ontario Provincial Cup qualifying meet recently. Competing in the Level 2 under-10 category, Sandro earned gold medals in the floor exercise, parallel bars, horizontal bar and all-around events, with silvers on pommel and vault. Local resident Matthew Menesses scored a bronze on parallel bars and a sixth all-around. GMHA welcomes museum material The Georgetown Minor Hockey Association is getting ready to celebrate its 75th anniversary season in 2011-12 and has a series of monthly events planned. As well, anyone who has memorabilia, photos or submissions for the Halton Hills Sports Museum can either donate or loan those items to be put on display in the museum, located in the upstairs meeting room at Mold-Masters SportsPlex.
