Pre-novice pair strike gold at Canada Winter Games Bell, Sylvester live up to top ranking By STEVE LeBLANC Metroland Media Group Their 2010/11 gold rush is now complete. Sticking with the tried and true routines that had met with victory at every turn this season, Acton's Hayleigh Bell and pre-novice pairs partner Alistair Sylvester of Stratford made a triumphant debut at the Canada Winter Games late last month in Halifax. The first-year duo were pegged as the team to beat heading into the event-- having reigned supreme at five straight meets, including the BMO Skate Canada Western and Eastern Challenge in Mississauga-- and showed just why during it. Delivering a personal-best performance in the short program and following that up with a dynamite free (long) skate, Bell and Sylvester added to their gold-medal haul with a commanding 86.69-point overall score-- which put them nearly 11 points ahead of the Alberta-based silver medalists. "All of our elements were clean and we just skated well together," said 14-year-old Bell, a former member of the Milton Skating Club before last year's venture into pairs skating necessitated a move to the figure skating hotbed of Barrie. "We'd been skating well leading up to the Games, so I was pretty confident we could win." Facing their biggest crowd to date, Bell wrestled with some initial butterflies for the short program but felt quite comfortable for the long routine-- which was highlighted by some double twists and throws. She and Sylvester enjoyed a healthy margin of victory in both rounds, besting Alberta's Kendra Dignessi and Cole VanDerVelden by four-and-ahalf points in the short program and just over five points in the long. "I'm really happy with how we did," said Bell, who skated to Moonlight Sonata for the short program and Escuela for the long routine at St. Margaret's Centre. With their Western and Eastern Challenge win, Bell and Sylvester will move up to the novice ranks next season.
