4 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,April 5, 2011 `Friendship quilt' making rounds for Acton Cancer Society branch Volunteers with the Acton Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society are taking a few different steps with their fundraising this year. The group will be holding a dance and silent auction at Acton Legion April 30, to raise more funds for their annual campaign. One of the items which will be featured in the silent auction will be a `Friendship Quilt' which was assembled by Acton Foodshare Chair Arlene Humphries. Humphries became involved in assembling the quilt following a discussion about the use of Friendship Quilts in the 1880s. They were used as both gifts when someone was leaving the area or as fundraising ventures when such things as a new roof were needed. The idea started to build and the material was purchased over a period of time. Packages of material were made up and sent to friends. The request was to return a 10-inch block of any design the individual wanted. The blocks were returned from as far away as Valencia, Venezuela and Moscow, Russia. Others came from Toronto, St. Jacob's and Acton. Every block is different as are the people who made them and their reasons for sewing them. The quilt contains 25 blocks-- some are traditional designs such as Ohio Star, Log Cabin and Sun Bonnet Sue. One block was made by an eight-year-old girl. The quilt was made with a lot of love, tears, laughter and friendship. The quilt will be on display around town during various events. Residents urged to be cautious near waterways With the arrival of warmer weather, spring brings melting snow, rain and ice. During spring, Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) is reminding residents that dangerous conditions exist on local streams, rivers, ponds and lakes. At this time of year, residents can expect higher, faster flowing water along with slippery, unstable stream banks and extremely cold water temperatures that can lead to very hazardous conditions close to any water body. As temperatures rise and flows increase along watercourses, the potential for flooding and ice jamming remains. CVC continues to monitor river, stream and ice conditions and will issue flood messages as conditions warrant. CVC is also warning residents, particularly those with young children, to exercise caution around any water body over the next few weeks. A `Friendship Quilt' will be auctioned off at a silent auction to be held during Acton Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society dance, April 30 at Acton Legion. The quilt was assembled with patches from around th world.
