SENIORS LIFESTYLES Acton Seniors to hold their big bazaar on Saturday By JULIE CONROY Acton Seniors Centre The big event at the Acton Seniors Centre is the Spring Bazaar on Saturday, May 7, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Everyone works very hard behind the scenes for weeks to make this event a success. Without our volunteers, where would we be? We have made a commitment to raise $400,000 towards the anticipated expansion of our centre in the not-too-distant future, so we need everyone to help with this huge fundraising event, whether it is baking, purchasing tickets for the great draws, creating something for the craft table, helping make sandwiches or serve tables. It is a wonderful joint effort by many of our members. We need to encourage our friends and neighbours to come out and enjoy the day between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m You will be able to buy a unique hand-crafted gift for Mother's Day or some delicious baking. You might be really lucky and win one of the two large gift baskets stuffed with all kinds of goodies or a prize from the penny table. After you have enjoyed shoppign you can take a weight off your feet and sit down to a delicious tea or coffee. We hope to see you there. Thinking of Mother's Day on Thursday, May 12, the Social dinner will feature ham, scalloped potatoes, broccoli salad and coleslaw followed by cake and ice cream. The entertainment is Abby Meltdown. I just know we will be dancing again. If you are not able to dance it's still fun just to watch everyone and enjoy the music. We will be celebrating birthdays again on Tuesday, May 10. Everyone whose birthday occurs in either April or May should receive a phone call inviting them to the tea. It doesn't seem like two months since I last mentioned the birthday tea. Bev Jones would like to thank the following volunteers: Mary Walsma, Judi Wanders, Lorrie Ryan-Lewis, Fay Byers and Pat Jones for their help with the seniors from Community Living North Halton who came to the Centre last Thursday for the Spring into Spring event. The weekly 50/50 was not won again, so this week the total should be around $600. Definitely worth stopping by and putting your loonie in the box and your name on the list. Be sure to drop in and pick up a copy, then you will know what activities are planned for the next four months, Lots of trips, dinners, Friday lunches followed by bingo, interesting speakers, exercise classes, hiking on Friday mornings, crafts and cards. Ruth tells me that the 50/50 on the bus to Rama was won by Claire Landry. The birthday prize was won by Janet Handy and sitting in the lucky seats were Merle Carr, Marie Richardson, Betty Brewer and Alison Colter. The winners in the Bingo on the Bus were Wayne Gallant, Bill Brewer 19 Independent & Free Press, Thursday, May 5, 2011 and Rose Morrison. What a wonderful response to the Acton and Georgetown Golf Day at Blue Springs on May 25. I am usually trying to persuade people to play but this time it filled up really quickly. It shows what a great time we had before. Nellie Bell tells me she has three Georgetown foursomes all set to play. If your name is down to either play golf at Blue Springs or go to Mohawk to enjoy the races and buffet dinner please pay as soon as possible. During June of 2010, approximately 140 Grandmother groups across Canada walked 12,000 kilometres collectively, raising close to $400,000 in support of the courageous and resilient grandmothers of SubSaharan Africa, who are raising their grandchildren orphaned by AIDS. The Halton grandmothers raised $67,100. This year, Saturday, June 11, Stride to Turn the Tide will unite Halton Grandmothers to Stride to Turn the Tide on AIDS in Africa once again grandmothers from six Halton granny groups as they walk 5 kilometers. All money raised through direct pledges to the Canadian grandmothers will be donated to the Stephen Lewis Foundation, which continues to fund projects, which provide critical services and support to the African grandmothers and the children under their care. The walk will commence at 9:30 a.m. at Heritage Place Re- tirement Residence at 4151 Kilmer Drive in Burlington. A barbecue will be held at Heritage Place after the walk. Each walker will pay a $25 registration fee, which entitles them to a beautiful scarf. Walkers are encouraged to collect as many pledges as possible.
