8 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, May 19, 2011 Local student honoured By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer A young Georgetown woman has been named a recipient of a Diabetes Hope Scholarship. Raeanne Dingwall, 18, a Grade 12 student at Georgetown District High School received the scholarship from the Diabetes Hope Foundation and Medtronic Foundation at the Toronto Centre for the Arts recently. Dingwall is one of 30 stellar young students with type 1 diabetes who was awarded a scholarship. She wants to become a pediatrician and is hoping to attend either McMaster or Western University next year. "I'm very thrilled," said Dingwall. "Financially I know it's going to be a lot of money to get where I want to be. It's certainly going to help me in my first year." The $2,500 scholarship is to go towards post secondary studies. Winners are screened for their academic performance, contribution to the community, demonstration of leadership skills and the quality of their diabetes care. Dingwall applied for the scholarship in March and submitted an essay on paying it forward. Dingwall was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of five and has never let her diabetes get in the way of achieving her goals. She was rewarded for her academic achievement with the Georgetown High School Gold Medallion of highest overall average. At school she was the leader of the Link Crew program to welcome incoming Grade 9 students to help them successfully transition from middle to high school. She also leads daily exercise classes to help children become more physically active. Through the classes she shares her lifelong dedication to healthy lifestyle choices with the children as well as her experiences living with diabetes. In 2007 her efforts were acknowledged through the Mayor's Youth Action Committee Youth Recognition Award. The Diabetes Hope Foundation, created in 1999, believes that with appropriate financial resources and the proper education, young people living with diabetes can live full and productive lives. The Medtronic Foundation is passionate about improving the health of people and communities throughout the world. It focuses its grants and community involvement in the areas where it can make unique and positive contributions.
