24 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, May 19, 2011 Acton Seniors Centre receives grant to buy teaching computers By JULIE CONROY Acton Seniors Centre The Acton Seniors Centre has received a New Horizons for Seniors Capital Assistance grant to enable seniors to update their computer skills and receive exposure to the latest technology. The Centre will be able to purchase six laptops and software to provide much needed training in computer literacy for members. The two original computers the Centre purchased were with a Trillium grant in 2000 and are very outdated and slow compared with the latest models. Additionally, we are able to purchase a LCD projector, which will be wonderful for the movies and other programs and presentations in the future, ensuring seniors remain connected and not socially isolated. To ensure our equipment is secure, we will also be purchasing a cupboard with a lock. These items will be a great asset to the Centre. The bazaar was very successful. The Penny Table winners have all been phoned. In fact most of the prizes have been picked up. Dorothy Rognvaldson won the large gift basket and Dymphna Clarke, the smaller one. The 50/50 was won by Alison Colter. The fundraising committee would like to thank everyone who helped in any way whether working, baking, supplying items for the tea tables, making crafts or supporting us by attending. This is one of our major fundraisers and the money raised helps with the everyday expenses of operating the Centre. The final numbers are not in yet, but over $2,500 was raised. On Tuesday, June 7, 1-4 p.m., North Halton Injury Prevention will be holding a safe driving workshop. Its objective will be to give you the most up-to-date information about advanced driving techniques, current legislation and how it all directly impacts you, the drivers of 70 years of age and up. I understand there will be a simulator used as part of the presentation. You must pre-register for this workshop. The Monday morning Craft group is looking forward to starting new crafts for the next bazaar. If you have any wool you would like to donate they would really appreciate it. Seventy-five members and guests enjoyed the social dinner celebrating Mothers on May 12. The trio, Abbey's Meltdown played during dinner and then picked up the pace after for dancing. Twenty-five members whose birthdays were in April and May celebrated their birthdays with their guests at the Acton Seniors Centre last week.
