The board consultants conduct assessments on children, who are struggling in class, to identify learning strategies for them. Furthermore, the staff does assessments for giftedness in children. The board has a wait-list of about 700 students with more referrals coming in on a regular basis. Under current staff levels, the average wait time for an assessment is 15 months. A staff recommendation came to the board at a recent meeting that asks for a total of $424,000 to be added in the next budget, which includes $180,000 for the hiring of two psychology staff members, a one-time fee of $175,000 for spring/ summer assessments and about $70,000 for software and database costs. The report also has a number of suggestions for better job recruitment strategies, streamlining the assessment and report writing process, ask principals to provide assessment space and more.
