8 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,June 28, 2011 SPORTS & LEISURE Road race draws 1,000 About 1,000 spectators took in the action Sunday afternoon at the inaugural elite men and women's Georgetown Criterium as the 2011 Canadian Road Championships took over the downtown area for the race and festival. An impressive list of Canadian cyclists tackled the challenging the 1.1-km loop and the event was held as a `Pointsrace' format, with points awarded to the best four athletes every five laps. Women completed 30 laps, while the men rode 45 laps of the course, with tight turns, climbs and descents at high speeds. Leah Kirchmann of Winnipeg raced to victory in the women's elite event, followed by Joëlle Numainville of Montreal. Rhae-Christy Shaw came in third place, winning her second medal at these Canadian Championships in her first appearance at the nationals. In the men's elite race, David Veilleux of Quebec took the victory, his second consecutive Canadian criterium title, followed by Ottawa's Derrick St. John in second and Benjamin Chaddock of B.C. in third. The Canadian Championships continue Thursday with the presentation of the para-cycling in Caledon, along with junior and masters road races and time trials through the weekend. Photo by Calvin Dyke Raider captain taken by Penguins With the third-last pick in Saturday's National Hockey League Draft, the Pittsburgh Penguins chose the outgoing captain of the Georgetown Raiders, Scott Wilson, in the seventh round, 209th overall. The 19-year-old forward had 20 goals and 41 assists in 42 games in his third season with the Raiders in 2010-11. A 6-foot, 175-pound Oakville resident, Wilson has committed to attend the University of MassachusettsLowell starting this fall. Wilson joins local resident Andy Bathgate among the Penguins' prospects. The 20-year-old Belleville Bulls' leading scorer played a couple of games late last season for Pittsburgh's American Hockey League affiliate in Wilkes-Barre Scranton. Thirteen different Halton Hills Bulldogs rippled the twine as they ran roughshod over the visiting Markham Ironheads 20-9 Saturday night in the opening game of the Ontario Jr. B Lacrosse League playoffs. The second-seeded Bulldogs now lead the best-of-5 OJBLL Eastern Conference quarterfinal series 1-0, with game two set for Markham tonight (Tuesday). Game three will be played at Georgetown's Alcott Arena Thursday at 8 p.m. Seventh-ranked Markham was taken apart by the special teams of the BullNEXT GENERATION dogs, who scored five times with the man advantage and four more while shorthanded. Halton Hills held intermission leads of 5-2 and 12-6 and outshot the Ironheads 46-34.
