SPORTS & LEISURE Lyons, Cock to compete for Canada 27 Independent & Free Press, Thursday, July 14, 2011 Locals make U-19 squad By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer Having finished fourth at the last world under-19 women's field lacrosse championships in 2007, Canada hopes to earn a podium spot at the 2011 event next month in Germany. And two Halton Hills residents have been chosen to play for the 18-member red-and-white side in Hannover from Aug. 3-13, with 12 teams vying for the title. Georgetown's Casey Lyons and Terra Cotta resident Samantha Cock were selected to represent the Canadian Lacrosse Association earlier this year and the team got its first big test at an international tournament on Long Island, N.Y. in late May. Against the powerhouse U.S. squad, which has won the past three world under-19 women's championships, things didn't go so well for Canada as the hosts ran away with a 21-7 victory. "(The Americans) were really strong and they definitely hammered us," said Cock, a 19-yearold defender who will start her second year in the archeology program at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa. in late August. "But we've had some good players out with injuries. Hopefully they'll be ready for the worlds." Lyons, who was named firstteam All-American for her play at Berkshire prep school near Springfield, Mass., also feels the Canadians have a lot to work on. "We'll do better against them the next time," said Lyons, an 18-year-old midfielder/attacker. "That was our first game together as a team since they announced who was going to be on it, so I'm sure that when we practise some more, it'll be a different story." Because national team members aren't eligible to play for their usual regular-season clubs, Lyons and Cock have been preparing for the worlds with a training program with sessions twice a week overseen by Halton Hills Jr. B Bulldogs' athletic trainer Jodi Nieuwendyk. A fundraising barbecue for Lyons will be held this Sunday at her Eighth Line residence (emergency #12727) from 3-10 p.m. Tickets are $30 each. Canada earned bronze medals at the 1999 and 2003 world women's under-19 championships behind the U.S. and Australia. The Canucks will open the tourney with a game against Iroquois nation representative Haudenosaunee on Aug. 3. This is the first time that the world under-19 championships will be held in Europe. "I'm not too excited about the long plane ride over, but I'm sure it'll be fun once we get there," added Cock. Photo by Jon Borgstrom Nurse helps women's eights finish second at World Cup Georgetown's Cristy Nurse was a member of the Canadian women's eights team that finished runnerup at last weekend's World Rowing Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland. The Canuck entry had to settle for silver medals despite leading the world-champion U.S. boat for much of the race, finishing just a second behind the Americans' winning time of 6:28.35. The 24-year-old Nurse was first selected to Canada's national team last year, not long after devoting herself full-time to the sport. A graduate of Georgetown District High School, Nurse is a law student in the University of Ottawa's grad program, but has taken leave from her studies to row for the national team. The Canadian women's eights will train in Italy leading up to the World Championships Aug. 28 to Sept. 4 in Bled, Slovenia, which will also serve as a qualifier for next year's Summer Olympics in London, England.
