But unlike a committee meeting the week week before, where members were unanimous in their support, not all councillors were on board this time around. Milton Mayor Gord Krantz requested that Regional council defer forwarding their comments, and opposition, regarding the proposed GTA West Corridor 4-3 option, until council meets next in September. Without elaborating, Krantz said Milton's council and Chamber of Commerce have some concerns about the Regional report. A Town report that was to be presented to Milton council last night (Monday) is in support of the potential new highway corridor that would stretch from York Region to the future Tremaine Road/Hwy. 401 interchange. "From a transportation capacity perspective, the Transportation Development Strategy Report identified Milton as the only section of Highway 401 in the urbanized GTA (i.e. Milton to Clarington) where there are no opportunities, either available or planned, to offload traffic. Adding these opportunities, known as redundancy, will reduce impacts due to major highway incidents including closures," states the report. It goes on to read that Milton staff strongly support the inclusion of the 4-3 alternative-- also known as the east-west corridor-- in the study as it would provide better access to the employment areas north of Hwy. 401. If approved by Milton council, staff's comments will be forwarded to the Ministry of Transportation. Krantz's request for deferral was met with much criticism in council chambers. "This should have been brought up at the committee level," said Halton Hills Councillor Clark Somerville.
