Georgetown family counsellor wants to help. Local girl, 8, gets wish to be an officer for a day By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer Local girl Kathryn Stewart recently had the chance to give policing a try when she was Police Officer for a Day during Police Day at Halton Regional Police headquarters. Kathryn got the opportunity through a wish granted through The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada and Halton Regional Police Service. The eight-year-old Georgetown girl was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in 2008 and was cancer-free following treatment until last September when the cancer recurred. She has been undergoing chemotherapy treatments ever since. Her mom Heather said treatments are going well, and Kathryn is "coping very well." Heather said her daughter "jumped" at the chance to be Police Officer for a Day. "She loved being involved, being active and doing fun things. So this was perfect for her," said Heather. The Region was given a deadline of June 6 to forward their comments on the GTA West study to the Province, however officials indicated they would wait for Halton Council's report. "I don't know if they would accept comments after today," said a planning staff member, during Wednesday's meeting. Most councillors agreed delaying the report until September sends the wrong message to the Province and the community. "I was very pleased with unanimous (committee) support," said Halton Hills Councillor Jane Fogal. "If you read the amendment we're following our own Strategic Plan and Official Plan. To defer now would be going in the exact opposite direction. I don't know why Milton is so late coming to the table...it's great that we've gotten the extension so far, but it's now or never." Added Oakville Mayor Rob Burton, "We're defining our vision of our community's future. This is no time to start backing away from the vision we are trying to create." The regional report states an eastwest corridor south of Georgetown "would provide network redundancy," while cutting through a significant portion of agricultural lands in Halton Hills and affirms that council strongly objects to the "unnecessary" highway. Krantz and Milton Councillor Tony Lambert were the only two, out of 21, to oppose the report.
