The 16-year-old lefthanded pitcher is the second-youngest player on the under-18 boys' squad, yet he's impressed Canadian head coach Greg Hamilton with his work on the mound during recent outings in the Dominican Republic and Cuba. Anderson was the only Canuck hurler not to surrender a run in two appearances for the JNT at the Cuba Summer Series, which was shortened to five games after four other contests were rained out. The only game Canada won in the series was saved by Anderson when he got the call to make a surprise appearance in relief in the 10th inning of the series finale, a 9-7 victory over Cuba. The 5-foot-11, 200-lb. Anderson picked off a runner at second base before getting the final out with a bases-loaded strikeout, earning a celebratory group hug from teammates. He started another game and tossed three scoreless innings before a thunderstorm washed out the contest with Canada leading 2-0. In total for the Cuban trip against its under-20 team, Anderson threw four innings, struck out three, walked one, beaned another and allowed no runs and just two hits. "That last game against Cuba, I think that's the most excited I've ever been in my life," said the Grade 12 Christ the King Secondary School student. "I'm usually a starter, so coming in for my first save like that, you're just trying to take advantage of the situation. Normally I do a long warmup, so to get thrown in like that was pretty intense. I'm glad things worked out and it's a great feeling that (Hamilton) had the confidence in me to put me out there in that role." The 25-year-old Club at North Halton member needed to shoot 67 or lower at the Morgan Creek Golf Course in South Surrey, B.C. earlier this week in order to get one of only four qualifying berths for the Canadian Open, which begins today (Thursday) at the Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club in Vancouver. Fifty golfers from around the world reached the final qualifying stage, with Greenwell tying for 21st place.
