4 Our Huge Thanks to all who helped raise $12,500 through Beyond the Stage Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,July 26, 2011 Busy intersection to be widened By CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer Construction will begin this fall at the Mountainview Rd./Delrex Blvd. intersection to widen it to allow for centre leftturn lanes. Council approved the new design at a recent meeting. There are more than 19,000 vehicles per day going through this intersection, and according to the Town-retained traffic safety specialist Gerry Forbes there are approximately three collisions per year. That's higher than expected based on the volume, he said, and 50 per cent of them are deemed "left-turn collisions". With the growth to come in Georgetown South, this collision stat is expected to grow. The traffic is growing at 2 per cent year, he said, and the collision rate is 4 per cent per year, "so you're losing ground." The new design for the intersection will allow for centre left-run lanes on Mountainview Rd. designed with a vehicular capacity of approximately three to four car lengths. In addition, the boulevards will be reduced to allow residents living near the intersection to continue parking their vehicles off-street. "This is one of the busiest intersections in town," said Ward 4 Councillor Bob Inglis, who has been working for many years to get a new intersection designed. "There has been a bit of history of accidents there caused by how it's designed now. Thank you for doing this." John Kwast, Manager of Design & Construction, said construction would likely be done between September and January. "We're optimistic that we can manage the traffic and the pedestrian movement at this intersection," said Kwast. While $380,000 had been budgeted in the 2008 capital budget for this project, it's expected to cost more than that. Staff will report back to council after the tendering is completed.
