16 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, August 25, 2011 SPORTS & LEISURE The Halton Hills Blue Fins finished 39th out of 189 teams represented at the 2011 Canadian Age Group Swimming Championships in Montreal and one of its members earned a gold medal. Matthew Fox became the first ever male Blue Fin to become a national champion, winning the men's 13-&-under 100m backstroke. He also added a silver medal in the 50m backstroke, fourth in the 200m back, along with fifths in the 50m and 100m freestyle events, an eighth in the 200m free and 15th in the 400m free. Kyle Haas also had podium finishes with a silver in the men's 16-year-old 200m backstroke and bronze medals in the 100m back, 50m free and 50m back. He just missed a medal in 200m IM and finished eighth in the 100m free. Haas also represented HHBF at the Canadian Senior National Championships the week before, making it to the finals in 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke races. Elizabeth Skuriat finished 36th in the women's 1,500m freestyle, while Aaron Brautigam placed 31st in the 200m breaststroke and 32nd in the 100m breast during his debut on the National stage. "I'm ecstatic with our results," said head coach Mike Thompson. "This is the best placing the HHBF has ever seen as a team. This is the most medals we have ever won and teams across Canada are really starting to take notice. We have come a long way since our rebuild three seasons ago. I am very proud of our athletes and their results." When asked about the best part of the experience, Thompson added: "It's not just one athlete's results getting us there. We're building a deep and diverse team. We've got lots in the pipeline, lots of young athletes seeing this stuff and saying, `I can do that too'." Montreal marked the official end to the Blue Fins season. The 20112012 campaign begins in September and will gear up to the 2012 Olympics in London, England. Photo by Eamonn Maher Down memory game The Georgetown Ladies' Powderpuff League is celebrating its 40th anniversary season with a reunion game and welcomes past players to take part in the contest. The reunion game will take place during the GLPL's playoff weekend on Saturday, Sept. 10 beginning at 12:30 p.m. at the Hornby ball diamonds. Started up with four teams in 1971 by a group of six women, the league currently has 16 teams playing either 3-pitch or softball, consisting of about 200 players in total. Reaching its peak in the late 1980s with 24 teams in the loop, GLPL president Sue Subject said that it likely won't be a problem finding alumni who'd like to take part in the reunion and she has sent out invitations to several former players, but wants to make sure nobody is overlooked. "We're going to have a fun one-hour game and we've asked the Mayor (Rick Bonnette) to act as pitcher for the two teams," said Subject. "There have been so many people who have contributed to the success of this league over the years and we don't want anyone to go unnoticed or unrecognized." The volunteer-run league hosts a tournament each June and has dontated thousands of dollars in past years to local-area community groups such as the Georgetown Hospital and the local food bank. Former players who haven't received an invitation and would like to play in the reunion game can contact Subject at ssubject@cogeco.ca or call 416-347-6275.
