12 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,August 30, 2011 North Halton's Hayward 2 for 2 at senior nationals A tournament-low round of 72 by Club at North Halton member Mary Ann Hayward clinched the Royale Cup Canadian Women's Senior Championship last week at the Whitevale Golf Club near Pickering. The 51-year-old longtime Georgetown resident, who now lives in Aurora, recorded rounds of 77 on the first two days of the event before distancing herself from the pack to win the Canadian senior title again in her second year of eligibility in that age group. Her 10-over-par total over three rounds was three shots better than runner-up Jackie Little of Port Alberni, B.C. "I guess my rounds got better each day. Even though I shot the same score in round one and two I felt I played much better," said Hayward. "I hadn't been playing a lot but I felt like I was able to play my way into it." With the victory, Hayward receives an exemption to tee it up for the 50th anniversary of the USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship, to be held Sept. 10-15 at The Honours Course near Chattanooga, Tenn. North Halton's Julie Green tied for 49th last week after shooting 90-85-84, while Gloria Sinclair finished in a tie for 61st with rounds of 86-80-98. ··· Georgetown South's Samantha Spencer placed third, just three shots back of SPORTS & LEISURE the winner, at last week's Golf Association of Ontario Juvenile Girls' Championship at the Loyalist Country Club near Kingston. Spencer, 15, carded scores of 78-7677 to close out at 15 over par, three shots back of winner Kennedy Bodfield of St. Catharines. With that finish, Spencer receives an exemption into the golf event at the 2012 Ontario Summer Games and is currently the top-ranked player in the GAO for the under-17 girls' division. The Club at North Halton member also had a 23rd-place result at the recent Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls' Championship in Richmond, B.C. with a 72-hole total of +17 (79-73-81-76). She tied for 10th in an international field at the American Junior Golf Association's Junior All-Star at Robinson Ranch tourney in Santa Clarita, Calif., a dozen shots off the lead with rounds of 77-76-77. ··· Fifteen-year-old Joel Albany of Georgetown had to settle for a share of second spot as he finished one shot behind winner Trevor Ranton of Waterloo at the recent Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour stop at the Osprey Valley course in Alton. Albany shot a 77 and tied with Raphael Berard at the event, which was shortened to 18 holes from 36 due to thunderstorms. Jr. A Raiders begin new season at home next week By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer The finishing touches are being applied to the Georgetown Raider lineup that will begin the Ontario Junior Hockey League campaign a week from Saturday. Second-year head coach and general manager Greg Walters has a couple of spots up for grabs as training camp continues at the Alcott Arena this week. The Raiders also played their first exhibition game over the weekend, a 3-2 overtime loss in Milton to the IceHawks using an all-rookie squad. Walters figures to have most of his veterans and new signings in place this Friday when Georgetown hosts the Hamilton Red Wings in another tune-up tilt at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 per person. The Raiders' season opener will be at home on Saturday, Sept. 10 against the Brampton Capitals at 7:30 p.m. Along with seven returnees from last season, the Raiders appear to be a much bigger team this time around as they try to break the hex of having been knocked out of the playoffs by the Oakville Blades four straight years. "We're going to be a lot different team this year with a much-higher compete level," said Walters. "A lot of games we're going to win through hard work and just wanting it more than the other team with the kind of character we have." Among the recently signed players include 20-year-old defenceman Dennis Playfair, a 6-foot, 200-pounder from Buffalo who spent last season with the Jr. Sabres and the Burlington Cougars. Eighteen-year-old blueliner Tyler MacPherson, at 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds from the Brampton midgets, has signed, along with 6-foot-2, 220-pound rearguard Patrick Wojenski from the Mississauga Rebels' midgets. Defenceman Luke Shiplo, whose brother Tyler played here last year, graduates from the Oakville midgets. There will be two new goalies in the fold this season with 19-year-old Keegan Wilson from the Stayner Jr. C Siskins and Connor Hughes from the Mississauga Rebels' midgets. Up front, joining the team is 18-year-old Tyson Fawcett, a 5-foot-7, 160-pound centre from Barrie who had a point a game with the Huntsville Otters last year.
