Aubin said the Sept. 11 date of the Walk of Hope is the third anniversary of the death of an aunt to ovarian cancer. "Ovarian cancer is the most fatal women's cancer, although more women are diagnosed with breast cancer, the survival rates are far higher than those with ovarian cancer," said Aubin. "Currently 65 per cent of women who are diagnosed with ovarian cancer will die." She said the need for an early detection-screening test for the disease is crucial to be able to treat it at an early stage as most often it's caught at a stage that is too late to cure. Raising funds for research into such a test is the primary focus of the Walk this year, but Aubin said the secondary focus, just as important as the first she believes, is to educate the community about ovarian cancer so that people can be more aware of its symptoms. "If they (women) feel that there is something wrong, it's okay to follow those feelings to find out if something is wrong," said Aubin. The event is geared to families, she said, with food being provided to all registered participants by Maple Lodge Farms. There will also be kidfriendly games such as bouncy castles, face painting, balloon animals, etc. Aubin said they hope to make the Walk an annual event in Georgetown. Halton Hills Ward 2 Councillor Bryan Lewis lauds Knowles and Aubin for organizing the event. "I commend Amy and Annie for their efforts to highlight this dreaded form of cancer," said Lewis. "I urge all residents of Halton Hills to either participate in the Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope at the Gellert Centre on September 11 or at least purchase a Sunflower of Dedication." "The funds raised by the Walk of Hope have had a tremendous impact on ovarian cancer research in Canada by supporting innovative new projects with a particular focus on prevention and early detection," said Dr. Barbara Vanderhyden, Corinne Boyer Chair in Ovarian Cancer Research at the University of Ottawa and chair of the research committee for Ovarian Cancer Canada. "Through the walk we're also committed to improving the odds of survival for the 17,000 women in Canada who now live with ovarian cancer." Online registration and donations for the Walk will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday Sept. 7, but people can still register on the day of the event and also hand in any donations whether it is cash, cheque or credit card.
