12 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,September 6, 2011 GDHS grad digs deep for mining honour By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer Class of 2011 Georgetown District High School graduate Amanda Ceniti had to dig deep into her talents as a musician to come up with the top prize in a province-wide video competition. Ceniti, 18, earned $5,000 for being judged as having the best overall video, called Mining: A Musical, in the Ontario Mining Association's So You Think You Know Mining challenge for high school students. She also received $500 to be used for purchasing new video equipment for GDHS. Over 80 contestants submitted video presentations no longer than three minutes in length that ranged from musicals to dramas to stop-motion animation, espousing the benefits of mining to society. Ceniti, who was runner-up with the same video for the second-annual OMA contest in 2010, plays and sings all the roles in the video, including the ghosts of mining in the past, present and future. "Mining was pretty new to me when I first entered last year and I didn't know much about it," said the Brampton resident, who enrolled at GDHS for its International Baccalaureate program. people in Ontario are employed in the mining industry, as well as a line about the invention of the methanometer for miner safety in the 1920s. "I always have really loved music and I wanted to show how mining was really important in the past, present and future, so I thought that the whole spinoff of a musical would be cool to show that," she said. "It was fun to combine my passion for music with a video and bring it all together with the mining theme." Ceniti began playing the piano at age three and recently completed her Grade 10 Royal Conservatory of Music exam, attending Montessori schools for 10 years. She began taking formal singing lessons in 2003 and has several theatrical credits to her name in operas and musicals. She also dabbles in web design and regularly makes appearances providing musical background for public events, including the OMA awards at the Royal Ontario Museum. Set to begin studies in the University of Toronto in September, Ceniti plans to major in neuroscience and minor in music. "I was thinking of psychiatry for a career, but music is always that dream in the back of your mind that you'd like to make a living at it," she added. "I think, though, that the medical path is the way I'll probably go." Rotary gets Trillium grant, holds raffle to help fund playground The Ontario Trillium Foundation has awarded $102,000 to the Georgetown Rotary Club for their proposed Universally Accessible Children's Playground. The playground will be an expansion of the Dominion Gardens Park playground with universally accessible play equipment. The $125,000 cost will be funded by the Rotary Club, which will work with Town staff on the final design and construction of the playground equipment for children with varying disabilities. It will include an expansion of about 2,400 sq. ft., including two new ramps, four deck components, seven play panels and five independent play components, plus a rubberized safety base. The Rotary Club of Georgetown is continuing with its fundraising efforts with a 500 for 500 Raffle, which involves selling 500 tickets for a 2012 Fiat 500 POP car. Cost of each ticket is $100. For more information on the lottery or to buy tickets contact the Rotary Club, uacp@rotarygeorgetown-on.ca. Tickets will also be for sale at the Georgetown Fall Fair Sept. 9-11. For more info visit www.rotarygeorgetownon.ca The draw will be held on October 15. Construction will occur in the spring of 2012. The rubberized safety base would create an ongoing cost to the Town of about $1,500 a year for regular maintenance and a future replacement cost of about $35,000. AMANDA CENITI "Then I did some research and you realize the impact it's had on society and how important it really is. I don't normally do the whole video-making thing either. I've always done graphic design things, so it was a fun challenge to be creative in that way."
