Candidate snapshots Continued from pg. 3 5 Independent & Free Press, Thursday, September 8, 2011 Moya Johnson Liberal Johnson, a Halton Hills councillor since 1993, has served as budget chair, Fire Services and Emergency Planning Chair, and is currently the Chair of Heritage Halton Hills. When it comes to her council position Johnson said she decided to "maintain my position for the entire time." However, during the actual campaign, Johnson will not collect her councillor's salary, although she will continue to do council business and serve her constituents. She would resign her position should she win, or return to her councillor's post as usual if she loses. Johnson said one of her primary issues would be to improve healthcare funding for the local hospitals in the Wellington-Halton Hills riding. "I lived through the Harris years as a healthcare provider," said Johnson, who has been a nurse for more than 30 years. "Those were horrible times, and while the McGuinty Liberal government has moved forward by leaps and bounds... I'm afraid what would happen if the Conservatives were in charge again and that's a very strong motivator. "I felt we need a stronger voice at Queen's Park," she said, pointing to three big issues: healthcare funding, the possible highway through south Halton Hills and education. Johnson has enjoyed a 30-year career in the healthcare field, and is a former member of the Halton District Health Council and Ministry of Health Advisory Committee. Johnson has lived in Georgetown for more than 30 years. She and her husband Rick have three children, and four grandchildren. "Time and time again I'm hearing concerns about healthcare, hydro, the new highway and more importantly, that people want their voice heard at Queen's Park. I have a track record of listening and understanding what people want and doing something about it." She has served as an education officer with Environmental Commissioner of Ontario, a tribunal member with the Farm Products Appeal Tribunal, a board member for Groves Memorial Hospital in Fergus and president of the Rural Learning Association. She is also a professional playwright and published author and is presently heading up a community development project in Canada's first deliberate mixed-income neighbourhood in Toronto. She lives in Eden Mills with her two teenaged children, just downstream from the farm where she was raised and where her family farmed for five generations. Since 2009 Dartsch has been looking after home care clients in Erin, Puslinch, Guelph-Eramosa and Guelph. He has a strong professional interest in effective delivery of health care services and says, if elected, is prepared to advocate for improvements to the full-service hospitals and other medical facilities in Wellington-Halton Hills. As a visiting nurse, he works to take the burden off hospitals and to allow patients to recover in their own familiar, comfortable surroundings. Dartsch's other passion is sensible transportation solutions for WellingtonHalton Hills and Ontario. He's looking forward to seeing GO trains rolling beside Highway 7 again soon, and will demand more of them, with more stops. No fan of mega-highways, Dartsch doesn't see the expansion of Highways 401 and 407 through the riding as options. "Ontario can't afford to lose more prime farmland by digging up gravel in one location to dump in another, just to create more habitat for cars and trucks," the website states. Dartsch is married with four children and lives in Eden Mills. For more info: Email raymonddartsch@gpo.ca Ted Arnott's campaign offices are opening. "I'd really like to see politics at all levels be a conversation between the constituents and their elected representatives," Hamilton says, "and to be frank, when I look at politics today, that's not what I see. I want to do it differently." She ran against Arnott in the 1990 provincial election in Wellington, finishing second, and served as a municipal councillor in the pre-amalgamation township of Eramosa. In 1990 she pioneered the community-engaged theatre movement in Canada, which had a major and lasting impact on her home township in terms of land use and community development and prompted her election 1-866-788-1688 or visit our website: www.re-electarnott.ca Everyone welcome - please join us RE-ELECT TED ARNOTT W E L L I N G TO N - H A LTO N H I L L S AUTHORIZED BY THE CFO FOR TED ARNOTT
