Lots to do during GSC's ASC invites seniors to get a new lease on life watching television or on their January 1 to December 31. If By JULIE CONROY Open House Week computers. Come out and join you should join in the next few Acton Seniors Centre us and get a new lease on life, months, the fee is pro-rated. By FLORENCE RIEHL Georgetown Seniors Centre Open House Week, September 12-16, just keeps getting busier all the time. Lots of reasons to come to the Centre to take part in an activity or to watch and learn. Here are some new features added. Tuesday, Sept. 13, is travel day as well as BBQ time. I have made arrangements for a rep from Great Canadian to be there from noon to 3 p.m. He will gladly talk with you about day trips and longer stay trips. There will also be a gentleman from Collete Travel. We look forward to Links2Care to be in attendance one of the days to promote their frozen meal program. Chartwell Classics from Oakville are supplying light refreshments on Wed., Sept. 14. They will have a display and literature to hand out regarding their retirement homes. Thursday, Sept. 15, TENA will have a display of personal care products for regarding incontinence. This is a very private matter and they will be asking you to sign up if you are interested in receiving private information. Halton Hills Food Box is going to do a cooking for two demonstration on Friday, Sept. 16. This will stress the "Cooking for Two" cookbook we have available and also to promote the monthly Food Box. Also, on the Friday morning, Phillips Lifeline will be talking about falls and prevention. We are now moving into our major fundraising activity. The Georgetown Seniors are pleased to welcome Justus, a musical group with a wide ranging repertoire of music, '40s to '70s, Hollywood to Broadway. The concert will be held on Sunday, Oct.16 beginning at 3 p.m. The venue is the Alliance Church on the Eighth Line. It is about the only space large enough to accommodate the large expected audience. Tickets are $15, call 905-877-6444. Tickets of $8 are still available for the joint Acton/Georgetown Social Dance to be held Sept. 23 in the Acton Legion, 7:30-11 p.m. Please call the Centre. During our Open House Week from Monday, Sept. 12 to Friday, Sept. 16, there will be lots of programs for you to watch or participate in. There will be refreshments and prizes too. We are hoping to see some new faces. There is no fee or drop-in charges during this week, so bring a friend. At what age can you become a member and enjoy all this fun? You may join the seniors centre when you reach 55 +. But age is just a matter of attitude. I know some people who are in their eighties but seem to have the energy of a fifty-year-old and I know some fifty-year-olds that spend most of their time sitting whether it is hiking, exercising, taking an art class, creating crafts, or making those gray cells work by playing cards and bingo. You might wish to learn now to use a laptop and expand your knowledge on the computers or just have fun at the social events. If you have a few hours to spare we are always looking for volunteers either at the front desk, helping with lunches or bazaars or being on a committee, sharing new ideas for fundraising, programs etc. This is a great way to meet new people, especially if you have recently retired or moved to Acton or the surrounding area. Our membership runs from (The balance of 2011 plus $25 for the 2012 membership). The latest Halton Hills Community Activity and Service Guide is now at the Centre. If you didn't receive a copy, we have lots at the Centre. All the Try It programs for the Open House for both the Acton and Georgetown Centres are listed on page 34. *** Do you have a vision of what you would like to see included in our anticipated expansion of the Acton Seniors Centre? If you would like to sit on a Space Needs committee, or attend a meeting explaining the plans for the future expansion, please let Wendy or Michelle know. 17 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday, September 13, 2011 Legion Ladies Auxiliary to honour its own this weekend By JANET MALLOY Georgetown Legion Ladies Auxiliary Our general monthly meetings begin Thursday, September 15th at 8 p.m. It sure will be great seeing all you girls again.
