Georgetown held a big celebration in Cedarvale Park in June, which included nature activities, crafts, games and memorabilia displays. Scouts camped out in the park and the day was capped off with a memorable campfire led by longtime Scout supporter Mark Rowe. Over the course of 100 years of scouting, many things have changed-- from the uniforms to the introduction of new technological badges to the organization becoming completely co-ed and dropping the "boy" from its name-- but one thing remains the same: getting kids back to nature. "We say O-U-T are the most important letters in `scouting,'" says George Henderson, the group commissioner for Acton and a former Scout himself. "Ninety-nine per cent of the kids who join just want to be outdoors." Since the very beginning, camping has been an integral part of the scouting experience, from smaller outings with their troop to larger camps with thousands of their fellow Scouts. "The smaller camps teach (the youth) outdoor skills like how to use an axe or a knife or how to build their own shelter," says Helmut Reinhardt, the group commissioner for Georgetown. "(The big camps) are an opportunity for youth to meet youth from other areas." For the last five years, Reinhardt has taken a group of local Scouts to Fort George in Niagara where they participate in mock battles and re-enact parts of the War of 1812. Local youth also join 3,000 fellow Scouts at a Dorchester camp on Mother's Day weekend. These two camps are just a few of the hundreds that Georgetown and Acton Scouts have participated in over the years. Local groups have travelled extensively to attend jamborees-- large gatherings of Scouts from across the country-- in places as close as Guelph and as far away as Alberta and Prince Edward Island. In addition to camping and outdoor skills, scouting also encourages community involvement.
