Halton Hills residents to the rescue Saving a turtle in Acton Local resident Janis Braida was driving up Fourth Line in Acton when she was shocked to see a man at the side of this heavily travelled road with "what I thought was a white cane". "I made a quick u-turn to see if I could help. Much to my surprise, when I got out of the car it was Councillor Clark Somerville," she said. Somerville was attempting to rescue an immensely large snapping turtle from being crushed by one of the many trucks travelling that road. He was using a white umbrella stick to deter traffic from where he was precariously standing watch. Another woman stopped by with two large shovels and together they were able to scoot the huge turtle to safer ground, said Braida. "Nice to see, people doing a good deed!" she said. 17 Independent & Free Press, Thursday, September 22, 2011 Great Horned Owl trouble in Georgetown Laurent Thibault reported residents in the area of Main St. S., at the entrance to Cindebarke Terrace were surprised and delighted recently to discover a Great Horned Owl standing on the sidewalk. The sight of his sharp claws discouraged walkers and joggers from getting too close, and he simply stood motionless, following movement with the characteristic 350 degree rotation of its head. It did not appear to be hurt, said Thibault, but citizens, concerned for its safety in a busy traffic area, were soon on cell phones calling the police, fire department, and other officials, but nobody had any idea of how to deal with this magnificent bird. Even the folks at Mountsberg Raptor Centre could not come to help. Eventually someone came from Vineland and with the help of a blanket captured the bird and gently placed him in a large cage with some food. "We will never know what caused this strange behaviour, but everyone appreciated getting a rare close-up of this beautiful nocturnal hunter, and hopes he will recover and be let free to resume his normal life," said Thibault.
