14 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, October 20, 2011 Acton Together launches with free dinner and movie night What happens when you have a tiny bit of money and a whole lot of community goodwill to make a difference in the community? A new group called Acton Together! The idea to work together to provide a social opportunity to bring Acton people together came out of a community meeting last spring. Earlier this year a group of youth and other Acton community members, St. Alban's Church representatives, Acton Community Hub staff and Community Development Halton staff, got together and brainstormed the idea of hosting a free community movie night alongside the community supper that already takes place at St. Alban's Anglican Church. Three community volunteers, Jennifer Gerrard, Debbie Bentley and Lori Price, took the dinner and a movie idea to a workshop to learn about grant writing and applied for a small grant from Forestview Church in Oakville. The grant application submitted by the volunteers was successful and the idea of free dinner and a movie for Acton was born, with the first event this coming October 21st and future events planned for the third Friday of each month. The community supper takes place at St. Alban's Anglican Church, 19 St. Alban's Dr. at Willow St. at 6 p.m. Then people are welcome to walk together to The Roxy, 6 Mill St. E. (a short walk) where a movie suitable for all ages will be shown starting at 7:30 p.m. The movie is Zookeeper. Free drinks will be supplied by Giant Tiger and popcorn made available courtesy of Acton Optical. Please note the church has a few stairs to the eating area. If you require assistance, please call ahead, 519-8532711. Good things happen when people are "Acton Together"!
