Thank a local war veteran Remembrance Day is fast approaching and there will be ceremonies held at cenotaphs across our great nation. As Canadians, we must never take for granted our current way of life; such as our freedom to express ourselves and to participate in cultural and political event. There is no free in freedom. This is a time to pay tribute to those Canadian soldiers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice with their lives. It is also a time to reflect upon our grandparents, our parents, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters who have served, or are presently serving, our country. Remember, if you know a veteran, say thank you! ··· This year the United Way of Halton Hills celebrates its 25th anniversary in Halton Hills. The goal this year is to raise $340,000, the highest ever. The United Way will be funding 20 agencies this year, up three from last year. For more information: www.tedarnottmpp.com Anti-violence banners mark month Halton Violence Prevention Council will be hanging its "Act Against Violence" banners throughout Halton today (Tuesday), to mark the beginning of Woman Abuse Prevention Month. The event will be marked by a ceremony at 10 a.m. today (Tuesday) in the Halton Region Rotunda, 1151 Bronte Rd. On hand will be Regional Chairman Gary Carr and Halton Regional Police Chief Gary Crowell and members of the Halton Violence Prevention Council. The Council's mission is to end violence against women and their children in the community. It's a co-ordinating committee that works toward improving services for women and children experiencing abuse, in order to achieve a healthy Halton community. Members of the council include Halton Regional Police, Halton Region, child welfare and counseling agencies, health services as well as school boards and legal services. This year the Council's work includes "Women Helping Women" an initiative to encourage women who have experienced abuse to get involved in the issue of violence against women. The initiative is an opportunity for women to speak up and speak out, to network and support each other and to share the ideas about services in the community-what they think is helpful, what should be different and what they really need after the abuse as they rebuild their lives. The council continues to be engaged in the Neighbours, Friends and Families campaign which is a provincial campaign to raise awareness of the signs of woman abuse so people who are close to an at-risk woman or a man who uses abusive behaviours can help. Anyone interested in a Neighbours, Friends and Families presentation or who would like to take part in the Women Helping Women initiative is asked to call 905-637-5256. Anyone involved in an abusive relationship can call the 24-hour crisis line of Halton Women's Place (905878-8555) or the Assaulted Women's Helpline (toll free at 1-866-863-0511).
