Song of Peace concert set for Nov. 6 By LOIS FRASER Georgetown Children's Chorus Seventeen years ago, a group of local citizens, led by Tom Schenk, decided to have a concert to remember our veterans' sacrifices and, at the same time, promote the hope of the lasting peace that we all long for. Sing Out a Song for Peace was born, with the assistance of organizers Schenk, Dale Wood, Lois Fraser, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 120 and representatives of the Georgetown Ministerial Association. Once again, there will be a concert on Sunday, Nov. 6, 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Christian Reformed Church (11611 Trafalgar Road). We will use this time together to remember the past and we will pledge once again to uphold the values of peace, tolerance and understanding in our world. This year, in addition to the music of the Georgetown Choral Society and the Georgetown Children's Chorus, there will be a special guest speaker who will remind us through her personal story about why we need to encourage peace, tolerance and understanding amongst all people. Ann Wynston, was born in Amsterdam in 1936 and became a Holocaust survivor when she benefitted from the ultimate kindness of several courageous Christian families in Holland, who hid her from certain death. A shocking 73 members of her immediate family perished in the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp. Wynston came to live in Canada in 1957 at the age of 21. She has spent her life volunteering with the Christian-Jewish Dialogue, for which she received a Knighthood from Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands in 1993. She is most grateful to those who saved her and to Canadian veterans who liberated her country and she has spoken to thousands of Canadian school children. In 2002, she received the Governor General Caring Canadian Award from Adrienne Clarkson for her work with Canadian veterans. The program has been shortened this year to allow for veterans and young families to get home early. A special welcome with preferred seating is offered to veterans and their families. Refreshments will be served after the service and admission is free, as always. Celebrate A New Season!
