6 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, November 10, 2011 OPINION Remember Once again, it's time to remember, but Remembrance Day is so much more than just that. It's not just about a moment of silence in our busy lives, or a quick prayer for those who are gone; it's about appreciating the sacrifices made for us and learning from the past. It's a time to feel pride for the country we've become. We need to go out of our way to say thank you to our veterans because, face it, without them we would have become a very different country than the one we are today. They lost friends, family and for many, their lives. They fought and died for freedom. That's worth a lot of respect. We wear poppies to show them they have a place in our hearts and we must never forget what they did for us. We need to continue remembering all the contributions, sacrifices and efforts made and the lives lost for us, and pass that knowledge on to our youth. During the last few years, we have seen the ugly images of war. We got a sense of what it is like for our soldiers fighting in Afghanistan. Through the media we have seen footage and learned about some of their hardships. Our soldiers are defending us so we can continue living in peace. We need to be grateful for that and value their efforts. We should take the time to support them and their families and pray for their safety. To all our service people, both past and present, we offer you our sincerest thanks. 905-873-0301 Publisher: Ken Nugent General manager: Steve Foreman (sforeman@theifp.ca) Retail advertising manager: Cindi Campbell (ccampbell@theifp.ca) Managing editor: John McGhie (jmcghie@theifp.ca) Distribution manager: Nancy Geissler (ngeissler@theifp.ca) Classifieds Kristie Pells (classified@theifp.ca) Accounting Rose Marie Gauthier Editorial Cynthia Gamble: News editor (cgamble@theifp.ca) Ted Brown: Photography (tbrown@theifp.ca) Lisa Tallyn: Staff writer (ltallyn@theifp.ca) Eamonn Maher: Staff writer/sports (emaher@theifp.ca) Letters policy Letters must include an address and daytime phone number. Letters to the editor Theft of scooter spoils life lesson Dear editor, My six-year-old son purchased an electric scooter this year with money he had diligently saved. He was very proud of this and I accompanied him to the store to make this purchase. We had had a number of discussions about the importance of setting goals and working toward those goals and this was a lesson well-learned. Recently, someone shattered this illusion by stealing this and another scooter from inside our carport. The people responsible did not take the charger so I assume the theft was done on a whim. If anyone should find an electric scooter in the area of Duncan Drive, please call me at 905-8730600 I would appreciate it. Marianne Bennett, Georgetown The headline said `Up to $5,000 available', and looking at the preface it looks as if it is a good program for homeowners. You have to get an expert to come and advise you what improvements your home needs to use less heating, etc. Cost of this is around $350, plus a second visit after the work is done for half that amount. If I want to replace a bay window for around $3-4,000 I would be the beneficiary of $40 from the grant. So it would cost me more to get the grant than I would get back. Perhaps, our local MP Michael Chong would take the time to tell me what a great program this is. John Shadbolt, Acton ical Society and everyone else who attended the events to show support of our milestone celebration! Maggie Brown, Lindsay Brown, Cathy Brown, Betty Anne Karn, Bill Sanford and Carol Lawson, Limehouse Presbyterian Church Lost leash found Dear editor, To the person who found my dog's tracking harness in the Scotsdale Farm parking lot on Nov. 1 or 2 and hung it on the nearby sign--a huge thank you. I've had that harness for at least 25 years and have a test with the dog on Nov. 13 therefore I really appreciate getting it back. Thanks again.
