The fascinating part of the show is not so much the vast collections of food these people amass, but the excitement at the cash register as their grocery expenses dwindle down to next-to-nothing with each swipe of a coupon barcode. Here at the Halton Hills Public Library, when you borrow a book we do not charge you the price and then discount it with a coupon-- but have you ever thought what it might be like if we did? For example, take the Hill Family (Mr. Halton Hill, his wife, Terra, and their children). Both Mr. and Mrs. subscribe to one magazine each. Mrs. enjoys novels, about four per month, along with her book club's selection. Mr. is fond of woodworking and is always interested in new ideas. He keeps up with the latest in nonfiction reading maybe two books per month. Some of those books they read on their new eBook readers. They learned to use those readers by attending an adult education evening. Mr. and Mrs. Hill have two children, Glenda and William. Both like a variety of bedtime stories: four different books per week. As energetic youngsters, they enjoy a soothing storytime program once per week. Every Saturday night is family movie night. So, if the Hill family were to pay for all of these books, movies, eBooks, and programs they would spend around $520.76 (not including tax) per month. That is $184 on adult books, $180 on children's books, $9 on magazines, $22.76 on movies, $125 on education and storytime programs. Are you ready for the coupon swipe? All of that-- every penny's worth-- is available from the Halton Hills Public Library for FREE! Just imagine, that's a car payment, or a substantial RESP contribution, or 1/3 of a mortgage payment, or a nice start on a vacation fund... And this is just a small portion of what the Halton Hills Public Library has to offer. Find out more by visiting the library, or our website, www.hhpl.on.ca. Plus there is one added bonus. You never, ever need to clip a coupon. Clare Hanman is a Technical Services Librarian
