Mayor, minister to talk highways A one-on-one meeting with the new Ministry of Transportation (MTO) minister has been scheduled "in record time", says Mayor Rick Bonnette. After the appointment of the new Ontario cabinet, the mayor wrote to the new MTO minister Bob Chiarelli asking for an appointment to discuss the GTA West Corridor Study. That study is controversial in Halton Hills for its proposal for a highway (Alternative 4-3) through southern Halton Hills farmlands. "Much to my surprise, I've already had a response from the Minister and will be meeting him, in record time, (Tuesday) Dec. 6," said the mayor. MTO is currently studying possibilities for a new GTA West transportation corridor from Hwy. 400 to Hwy. 401. Two recently released preferred options for further study include 4-2 and 4-3. Alternative 4-3, proposes a highway, that would extend south of 10 Sideroad, connecting with Hwy. 401 at Tremaine Rd. in Milton. For more than a year the Town and residents, have raised objections to 4-3. Halton Hills HIGH LOW 5 Independent & Free Press, Thursday, December 1, 2011 WEEKEND FORECAST... FRI. 20 -10 SAT. 40 00 SUN. 60 20 Now a Proud Dealer of Town admits it could have been `more courteous' Continued from pg. 3 was installed as a result of the sharp curve and limited sightlines pointed out in the Glen Williams Traffic Study and is one of three mirrors to be installed in town. The two others will be located in the Main St./James St. area of Georgetown and at the CN underpass on McNabb St. in Georgetown. Those mirrors will be bigger and Raj said he's hoping they're delivered this week, to be installed next week. "We want to test them out to see how durable they are," said Raj. Raj said the mirrors are used in other municipalities and with the installation of the mirror outside of Robson's home "the sightline issue is gone." Regarding Gould's assertion that the sightline could have been improved at Robson's by trimming trees, etc. Raj said he "could say with confidence that trimming trees and removing brush would not yield the same results as the mirror provides." Robson concurred, saying moving her mailbox or trimming her trees wouldn't improve the sightline around the curve. Raj said the Town won't take the mirror down as Gould has requested because it's in a public right of way. "We would install that mirror whether the resident was happy or unhappy about it. It's a safety issue," he said. But he said Town staff "will consider more courtesy in the future." Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette also stressed it's a safety issue. "It's a safety issue not only to protect whoever comes out of the driveway but also the people going by the house," said Bonnette. He said the Town will not be taking down the mirror, but he will send Town staff over to analyze the trees in front of Gould's home. He did say "there could have been better communications" with Gould before the mirror was installed.
