6 Halton Hills Bears that Care Thursday, December 8, 2011 Beary Merry Christmas The Georgetown Bread Basket The Georgetown Bread Basket first opened its doors to the hungry in 1996. In 1997 they became an accredited member of the Ontario Association of Food Banks and a registered not-for-profit food bank. The Georgetown Bread Basket is a non-profit volunteer-based charitable organization whose mission is to provide and promote access to healthier eating for our clients. Several community churches, businesses and service organizations assist us in meeting the needs of our clients but with the current economic times there is even a greater need for your assistance. The food bank first opened its doors to the hungry in 1996 and became an accredited member of the Ontario Association of Food Banks in 1997. A group of up to 12 directors meet at least monthly to plan the Georgetown Bread Basket's daily activities, and other volunteers from the area generously give their time to help collect and sort food and to assist the clients in their shopping. We are able to serve the clients due to the generous donations of both food and cash that we receive from you, the community. Until recently, the Georgetown Bread Basket only offered non-perishable foods. Then the food bank got involved in Halton's Fresh Food Box program, which purchases in-season fruits and vegetables in bulk and sells fresh food boxes at a reduced cost. Fresh Food Boxes come in three sizes. A family size box costs $17 and comes with 15 different fruits and vegetables. The Georgetown Bread Basket also works in partnership with ReFresh Foods, a regional food collection and distribution initiative, which collects surplus perishable foods from grocery stores and restaurants and redistribute it to food banks and community agencies. The initiative enhances the type and quantity of food donations distributed in Halton by using a refrigerated hybrid truck for distribution of food donations. This does not change the Georgetown Bread Basket's method of collection or distribution of food, but enhances the selection of food for our clients. We at the Georgetown Bread Basket will continue to work in partnership with the great community of Halton Hills to meet the needs of many adults and children in Halton who do not have adequate access to nutritional food - those who live below the poverty line. Yes, even in Halton Hills, hunger and poverty do exist and we must strive to meet the needs of those who cannot afford what we often take for granted. 185 Guelph Street, Georgetown 280 Guelph Street (Inside Wal-Mart) Georgetown 374 Queen Street East, Acton 332 Guelph Street, Georgetown, Ontario (across from Canadian Tire) 905-877-2279 www.barragerscleaners.com NEW WAVE Pool & Spa Service NATURAL GAS & PROPANE PIPING HEATING & COOLING FIREPLACES & BARBEQUES TANKLESS HOT WATER HEATERS 905·873·2394 · Inground Pool Installations · Pool Chemicals & · Major & Minor Repairs Accessories · Replacement Liners · Pumps, Heaters & Filters 519-942-2722 49 Commerce Cres., Acton GEORGETOWN 5 MOUNTAINVIEW RD.
