He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Marjorie; his daughter Sarah and her husband Mark Burrows and their children, Bryce, Christian and Thomas of Georgetown; and his daughter Leslie and her husband Jeffrey Steinberg, and their children Hilary and Andrew of Toronto. He is fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews in the U.K., Australia, USA, India and beyond; brother William and his wife Eileen in Spain; sister Anne and husband Jeff in Australia. He is predeceased by his sister Josie in the UK. John Phillips Bryant was born May 24th, 1929 in Bedford, England where he spent his formative years during the Depression and World War 2 leaving him with a marked appreciation for all things military. He especially loved the pipes and drums. After finishing his military service, John ever the adventurer, immigrated to Canada. He landed in Toronto on the same day as Hurricane Hazel and often remarked that he wondered at the time if he had chosen a new land that rained more than England. Marjorie followed in 1955 and they were married in February 1956. He and Marjorie lived for a time in Toronto with their MG-A., eventually settling in the village of Greenwood, Ontario to raise their two daughters, Sarah and Leslie, and their menagerie of pets. John and Marjorie moved to Georgetown in 1996 to be closer to their family. John was formally trained in the UK as a dental technician. A typical immigrant, John sailed to Montreal in what he described as a "leaky old troop ship", landing in Canada with 25 quid in his pocket and a trunk on his back. He tried his hand at many things to earn a living in his adopted land. (He was fired from the bargain basement at Simpson for selling the president's golf clubs that were in for repair.) Eventually, he landed a position with Highland Creek Sand and Gravel and rose from the scale man to the sales manager, selling aggregates for most of his career and becoming an expert in pit reclamation. John embraced typical Canadian pastimes and became a camper, canoeist, figure skating and accomplished skier. He loved all things athletic, playing rugby for the Toronto Wanderers and working to build the Fletchers' Fields Rugby Club in Markham. He was whitewater canoeing at 60 and skiing with his grandchildren at 70. He passed on his love of fireworks to them as well. Throughout his life John was always ready to lend a hand for projects in the community or a new roof in the family. He and Marjorie were constantly fixing older homes- it was part of their life together and there were always tools on the kitchen table. He loved his carpentry and furniture building, his clocks and lamps, and his antiques. He would not miss a Formula 1 race and loved British motor car events. John was a proud Canadian with a sense of humour that is uniquely British, often including the dress-up box at many parties. His humour was at its best with his diaspora of British friends and particularly in his playful antics with his grandchildren with whom he spent a lot of time. John lived a long and eventual life; the occasional tangle with the old lawnmower, wheelbarrow or ladder sent him to the hospital but never kept him from a party. John was a thoughtful and level-headed advisor, who was always there to listen and who would never betray a confidence. He was a good man and will be sorely missed. A funeral service in his honour will be held at St. George's Anglican Church, Georgetown on Monday, December 19th at 1:00 pm., followed by a reception at 7 Park Avenue, Georgetown.
