4 The IFP · Halton Hills, Thursday, March 1, 2012 Congratulations! Local riding named as election phone call scandal grows By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer Wellington-Halton Hills is one of about 40 ridings across the country where Liberals and New Democrats say residents received misleading or harassing phone calls during the 2011 federal election campaign. Guelph, Oakville and Mississauga East are other nearby ridings targeted by the fraudulent calls. Opposition MPs are seeking an independent probe into alleged dirty tricks they say succeeded in suppressing the vote and skewing results in a way that helped give the Conservatives a longsought majority. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has denied that the Conservative Party of Canada had any role in making the calls, and Wellington-Halton Hills MP Michael Chong said his campaign team didn't either. "Our local campaign had nothing to do with these alleged phone calls," said Chong "My local campaign never contracted a company to make phone calls on our behalf. All phone calls (from his campaign) are made by local volunteers who have the highest ethics, standards and accountability." He said he tells his campaign team he has "zero tolerance for any unethical behaviour." Chong said he learned of the calls in the riding about four days ago and wasn't aware during the election they were occurring. He said their ofMP MICHAEL fice did receive calls from people confused CHONG about where they were supposed to vote, but added those calls come in during every election. He said since the story about the voter suppression scandal broke, his office connected the dots and has drawn the conclusion that calls to his campaign office during the election from voters in the riding with RR Guelph addresses saying they had been called and given incorrect information on where to vote were related to the misleading call issue that has arisen in the neighbouring Guelph riding. Last week he said his office received two phone calls, one from an Acton resident and another from Rockwood, who said they too had received similar misleading calls during the election, but in both those cases, Chong said the people disregarded the information and voted at the correct place anyway.
