I am afraid to encourage my children to have an imagination any more for fear of police involvement. What are your thoughts? With so many price variables when choosing a retirement home how do I make a comparison? Q: A: DEATHS DEATHS WALLER, John Richard Peacefully on Sunday March 4th, 2012 at Extendicare Halton Hills. The 4 year old child said that it was a picture of daddy with a gun to kill monsters and bad guys. Since monsters are obviously make-believe, I am not sure why the teacher would think the gun to kill them would be otherwise. Protecting children is a real concern but common sense must be part of the mix. As I thought of it further, I wondered what the appropriate response should have been. While I understand the teacher's initial concern and I know that the teacher is not supposed to carry out the investigation, I would think that a few questions such as "is it a real gun or a make believe gun" or some thoughts regarding the child's demeanor and previous knowledge of the parents should give some indication of the appropriate response. Even if the school had concerns regarding their obligation to report, the child welfare agency and police certainly, in my view, went overboard. The family, including all their children, has been traumatized by this overzealous response. When all of this and the additional costs to taxpayers for both the police and the child welfare workers are accounted for, it supports my belief that we need to revamp the mandatory reporting system to allow for professional discretion and common sense. This seemingly dauntless task can be made easier if you plan ahead, give yourself time and ask lots of questions. Find out exactly what is included in the quoted rate. Is the cost all-inclusive or is it for the room only? What nursing services are included and are extra costs clearly itemized? Ask about costs you may incur now and "down the road". You don't want any surprises. Are three meals a day provided in the cost? Are snacks included? If there is a meal plan, what are the costs and what is included? What is the cost if you have guests stay for a meal? If you are ill, will you get a tray to your room at no added cost? If housekeeping is included, how often is the room cleaned and is the bathroom cleaned daily? Is personal laundry included and if not, what charges can you expect? Ask to see the rooms and establish how the room size is determined. What is the area of living space. Some rooms include the bathroom area in the equation, some don't. Also, ask to see rooms with furniture in them. Are there private bathrooms or are the bathrooms shared? Do the bathrooms include a shower in addition to a sink and toilet? Sometimes the shower is down the hall. In short, ask many questions so that you are comparing the cost of similar services and living space. DR. Sadly missed by the Beckett family This longstanding myth has been circulated for years. It is understandable. Pregnant women experience hormonal changes which may cause some puffiness and bleeding of the gums. This will usually occur in the last three months or so of the pregnancy. In addition, it is very easy for the pregnant women and "new mom" to put off proper dental care and hygiene. After all, is there anyone busier than a new mother? The delay in dental care may pose problems for the teeth, including decay. Keep in mind, most dentists will try to avoid x-rays when examining pregnant women. If done, it may only be for a single suspected tooth. The experts agree that proper rest, good nutrition and excellent prenatal care help the new baby and the mother. Good dental care is a crucial part of the care you need as a mother-to-be. 905-702-7891 JENNI VENERUZ I woke up feeling like the room was spinning around me. When I saw the doctor he diagnosed me with BPPV. What is this and how can I fix it? Q: A: BPPV stands for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. It is a very common problem of the inner ear and can easily be treated by a trained professional. Crystals that are normally contained in a sac in the inner ear can become dislodged and float into the semi circular canals. Here, they stimulate sensors inappropriately and give the sensation of "spinning", or VERTIGO. There are several reasons why this may occur, including head injury, ear infections, stress and age. The treatment consists of gentle positional changes of the head which will guide the crystals back into their proper location. If done properly, relief should be immediate and only 1-2 treatments should be required.
