SHOP HALTON HILLS Russell's Handyman Services When Russell Hillier starts his day, he knows he won't be doing the same thing he did the day before. As the owner and operator of Russell's Handyman Services, he helps clients with the home repair projects they aren't able to do themselves, such as trim work, custom closets, painting, tile work, crown molding and interior and exterior door installation. "I like the different jobs I get to do," Russell says. "Every day is a different thing: could be tile, could be drywall, could be carpentry work." The Georgetown native founded his business eight years ago after moving to Mobile, Alabama. Home repair had always piqued his interest and he soon found himself with a thriving business on his hands. "I only advertised once and I was busy for five years straight," Russell says. When he moved back to Halton Hills to be closer to family, he brought his business with him and word soon got out about his work. Russell attributes his business's success to his honesty, punctuality and commitment to getting the work done in a timely fashion. "I wouldn't do a repair on someone's house that I wouldn't do on my own," he says. 416-624-8772 CAROLYN WILLIAMS info@puremagicvacations.ca www.puremagicvacations.ca RUSSELL HILLIER Peter Doucette & Jennifer (Oxford Auction) For Oxford Auction owner Peter Doucette and assistant buyer Jennifer, honesty is the best policy. Peter, Jennifer and the staff at Oxford Auction travel around the country buying precious metals like gold and silver and selling them back to the refiners. The Oxford buyers pay top dollar by weight for a variety of gold and silver items, like jewelry, knick-knacks, trophies and even teeth. "We're probably one of the highest-paying road shows out there," Peter says. "And we're honest. If someone comes in with something they think is 10 carats but it's actually 14 carats, we'll pay them the 14-carat rate." Before visiting a buyer, Peter recommends that customers do their research. Learn about the items you want to sell and find out the current rate for gold and silver, he says. "I wish people would educate themselves so they don't get taken advantage of," Peter says. "There are all kinds of different guys out there right now, so do your research before coming to see me or anyone else." Although the business is based in Ingersoll, Oxford buyers come to Halton Hills a few times each year. "We have a good little following in Georgetown," Peter says. "It's one of our better towns that we go to." Jodie McGucken (Johnson Associates Real Estate Ltd., Brokerage) Jodie McGucken has a history of leading her clients home. Barhydt - Barrister - Criminal Law Practice It all started with To Kill A Mockingbird. Charles N. Barhydt cites Atticus Finch, the hero of Harper Lee's Pultizer Prize-winning novel, as one of the main inspirations that led him to a career as a criminal lawyer. "As a criminal lawyer, I defend society's liberties. When you defend the unlovely, you defend everybody," says Charles, who was called to the bar in 1981. "Atticus got me hooked." After 30 successful years practising in Toronto, the Terra Cotta resident is bringing his services to the people of Halton Hills, hanging his shingle alongside the fine folks at Helson Kogon Ashbee Schaljo and Associates. Charles will be filling a void in the community - until now, there were no criminal lawyers in town. In addition to his busy law practice, Charles is also an active volunteer. He sits on the board of Halton Community Legal Services and is involved with Out of Bounds, a grief support group in the Jane/Finch corridor; Camp Oochigeas, a camp for kids with cancer; and the Children's Wish Foundation. He is also a proud member of the Criminal Lawyers' Association. "All lives get better when people are together helping," he says. "That is the definition of community, I want to help the people of Halton Hills and while doing it, I will be doing something I love." Jodie McGucken, Sales Representative jmcgucken@trebnet.com White Rabbit Books When married couple Tom and Marilyn Konyndyk were thinking of names for their used book store, one option stood out from the rest. "Our last name is Dutch for 'rabbit on a hill' and Marilyn and I met in an establishment called White Rabbit. Plus there's the Alice in Wonderland reference," Tom says. "There were a lot of reasons, so naming it White Rabbit was inevitable." Just over a year ago, White Rabbit Books opened its doors to sell quality used books in a wide range of genres - from fiction and kids books to business and travel - as well as book-related giftware and reading glasses. The store is located in a beautiful old home on the edge of downtown Georgetown. "We like to say that our books are considerably newer than our location," Tom says. With free tea and coffee for customers, White Rabbit Books has a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere that encourages meandering, browsing. Tom and Marilyn's mission is to serve people who want to read books and they enjoy helping clients find that elusive title. "You can come looking for a specific book or you can come to browse," Tom says. "My daughters invented a word for it: they used to say 'Mom and Dad are going booking,' which is combination of books and looking." Charles N.
