4 The IFP · Halton Hills, Thursday, March 8, 2012 Clocks will spring ahead one hour on Sunday, March 11 for the switch to daylight time and the Halton Hills Fire Department says this is a great time to change batteries in smoke alarms. Fire Chief Brent Marshall strongly recommends testing the alarm after changing the batteries to ensure it will function. Aside from pushing the test button to sound the alarm, another easy way to test it, is to hold a lit incense stick 10-12" below the alarm and allow the smoke to drift into the device causing it to sound. Once the alarm sounds, fan the smoke away and give the device a quick vacuuming to ensure it is free of dust, which can affect the performance of the smoke alarm. The Fire Department recommends replacing smoke alarms between seven and 10 years old. Manufacturers' specifications may also include an expiry date, which may be stamped on the device; however, generally speaking, the life span of a smoke alarm is 10 years. Remember to move clocks ahead Sunday Mayor Rick Bonnette says, "Properly installed and maintained, working smoke alarms prevent injuries and save lives. With the minimal costs of smoke alarms today, everyone should have working smoke alarms in their homes. With a little extra effort, we can keep any unnecessary tragedies from occurring in Halton Hills". For any additional information on smoke alarms, please call 905-877-1133 and ask for the Public Education Division. Risk Watch Grade 6 students at St. Francis of Assissi School will be prepared for the switch to daylight time this weekend as Capt. Dave Ford of the Halton Hills Fire Department dropped by the school to not only inform the kids about moving the clocks ahead one hour, but also remind them to change their smoke alarm batteries. Photo by Ted Brown Clarification: Bennett Pl. deal not finalized A March 6 article, Bennett Place residents strike road deal with Town, requires clarification. While an agreement has been been reached on some points, including the $2,770 for service, the Town and residents of Bennett Place continue to negotiate a deal for road maintenance of their private lane. Bennett Place spokesperson Michael Bennett says there has been no agreement yet. "This is a long way from being over," said Bennett, adding the residents continue to talk with the Town. "We've stopped fighting on the calculation of that fee," he said. "But we continue to debate the other fees." "The provision of maintenance service is currently under discussion with the residents of Bennett Place and once all the details are worked out, staff will report back to council for execution of the final agreement," said Director of Infrastructure Service Chris Mills.
